A Resolution For Liberals: Grow Up
If 2014 proved anything, it is that most of the American left is lingering in a kind of perpetual childhood. No claim is too outrageous, no fact is too specious, no cause is too stupid. The American liberal has become like that person we all know with no filter. Even when sober, these people lack the little thing in their brains that is supposed to tell them when to shut up. Liberals are just like that. At a time when everyone is tidying up their list of New Year’s resolutions, the left in this country should adopt one of their own: use 2015 to finally grow up.
But experts tell us that resolutions are easier to stick to if they are specific in their intent. So maybe “grow up” is too vague. For the principle to stick, it would be best to break it down into smaller, more easily definable steps. Here are five such steps.
Step #1 – See the Truth About Your Leaders
Whether it’s the Democrat Party elite, the liberal billionaires like Michael Bloomberg, or the race activists like Al Sharpton, the last thing liberal leaders care about are liberal issues. They use these issues to further their careers, pad their bank accounts, and ensure another generation of Democrat viability. This is true of most leaders, by the way, but conservatives seem to understand that better than liberals.
Step #2 – Educate Yourself About the Free Market
If you want to continue living in America, you should probably get used to the economic system upon which it is built. That system prizes individual achievement, rewards good ideas, and gives everyone an equal opportunity to succeed. The more government regulations there are mucking it up, the worse off the economy is.
Step #3 – Stop Depending on the Government
You know what’s great about the human spirit? With hard work, dedication, and sacrifice, you can accomplish almost anything. You can become rich, sophisticated, happy, healthy, and wise. You can also become poor, crude, miserable, sick, and stupid. It’s all up to you! Some will face greater obstacles than others, but there are those who have overcome unimaginable odds to achieve victory. If they can do it, so can you. You don’t need the government’s help.
Step #4 – Stop Living in an Echo Chamber
Guess what? If you only read about conservative viewpoints through a liberal lens, you’re only reinforcing your own misguided beliefs. Try branching out in 2015. Instead of reading one outrageously out-of-context Rush Limbaugh quote on Daily Kos, try listening to a whole program yourself. Read the speeches of Ronald Reagan. Read the writings of Booker T. Washington. Use that greatest of gifts – your mind – to decide for yourself what you believe.
Step #5 – Take Pride in Yourself
This last step occurs naturally when you follow the other four, but you can start with this one if you like. Taking pride in yourself starts with realizing you don’t need to be ashamed of stuff you had no control over. A white American in 2014, for example, does not need to apologize for slavery. A man in 2014 does not need to apologize for how his ancestors treated women. Liberals want to forget the past unless they can find something to be ashamed of. Cast off that burden once and for all. Life is hard enough without paying for the mistakes of dead people.
