In what almost sounded like a threat, liberal journalists on ABC News said Wednesday night that if Democrats don’t get their preferred president, there may be a mass-scale revolt against the Electoral College, the legitimacy of our elections, and the Constitution itself. George Stephanopoulos, Terry Moran, and NeverTrumper Matthew Dowd each took turns musing about the tantrum that the left will throw if they don’t dethrone Trump.
“The rules are the rules and the rules of our election are that it’s determined by the electoral college, not the popular vote but right now Joe Biden is leading in the popular vote,” noted Stephanopoulos. “Democrats win seven out of the last eight popular votes, but don’t hold the presidency for eight — for 16 of those years, what does that say about the country as — and do you think the country will fully accept it?”
Moran said that this is an example of “the Constitution at work” in tones that suggested that he wished we could do away with it altogether.
“A Biden loss would call into question of legitimacy of the democracy for a lot of people,” Moran said. “They’ll just say this is baloney. This doesn’t work. We keep getting all the votes that in a normal majoritarian race you should win the presidency with and this system which dates from a slave-holding, constitutional founding doesn’t work for us. It’s very difficult to change but I don’t — I think it will deepen cynicism, deepen distrust. It is what it is. It is how the system works. But you can’t say that young people coming up, people who worked hard to do whatever they could to get their guy across the line, got him across the line and see, again, that because of the system they don’t win, that’s going to cast doubt on it for them.”
Note the way he managed to throw that “slave-holding” reference in there, as if the construction of the Electoral College has something to do with racism. Then again, this is 2020. Everything is about racism.
“I agree with what was said,” Dowd said. “There will be serious questions if that happens in the aftermath of this. Not only we’re divided on everything else, we’re going to be divided on something that’s been in our Constitution for 230 years.”
If the situation were reversed, do you think we could find a single Democrat in favor of abolishing the Electoral College? No, in fact, they would be calling any Republicans advocating for that as unconstitutional, un-American fascists and we would see endless deep thinkpieces about tyranny of the majority. But since it’s their guy getting the shaft, we have to rethink our relationship with those old white supremacists like Thomas Jefferson.
Funny how no one ever looks at these electoral maps – deep red from coast to coast – and thinks there’s something “wrong” with Democrats winning under these circumstances. If these leftists had their way, New York City would just choose the president every four years and the rest of us would submit to their metropolitan wisdom.
Do you doubt it?
