Try as he might, President Obama has been unable to turn the tide of opinion in favor of illegal immigrants. He remains on the opposite side of the issue from most Americans, a realm he must be extraordinarily comfortable with by now. If he isn’t careful, he’s going to not only cost his party the 2016 elections, he’s going to be largely responsible for turning the Democrats into an obsolete force in American politics.
According to a new Rasmussen poll, Americans couldn’t agree less with Obama when it comes to deportation. While Obama wants to cut back on the policy of sending illegals back to their home countries, U.S. citizens want him to get more aggressive about deportation. 62 percent of respondents said that America was not aggressive enough in sending back those who crossed the border illegally. A full 83 percent believe that people should have to prove they are legally in the country before being eligible for public services like welfare. 54 percent disagree with the notion that an illegal born on American soil should automatically be given U.S. citizenship.
The backlash is predictable and inevitable. Obama pushed too hard, and he has been met with the appropriate resistance. Unfortunately, this president isn’t concerned with what the majority of Americans think about his policies. He is concerned with one demographic and one demographic alone – Hispanics. Democrats believe that if they can shore up the Hispanic vote, they will easily conquer Republicans in future elections. However, that cynical strategy only works if they don’t alienate everyone else in the process. And that’s exactly what they’re doing.
The issue of illegal immigration is not nearly as complex as we have been encouraged to believe. In fact, this is one instance where it would do us a lot of good to break things down to their simplest possible components. Instead of fretting over impossible numbers like 11 million illegal immigrants, we should look at America like a tribe of 50 individuals, guarding over a limited set of resources. Suddenly, that tribe elects a leader who is perfectly fine with outsiders coming into the camp, stealing the resources, spreading disease, committing crime, all while refusing to learn the language of the tribe.
In that scenario, how long would it be before the tribe chased the leader out of camp with a heavy stick? Then why haven’t we done the same with Barack Obama?
This is a country that can’t afford to round up 11 million immigrants, but we have all the money in the world to send them to college.
We can’t afford to build a better fence, but we can afford to provide welfare for every Central American that crosses the border.
Why is it so controversial to simply follow the law? What are illegal immigrants bringing to America that we need so badly?
And when you ask that question, the answer is obvious. This is a political ploy from beginning to end. If the immigrants flooding over the border were white conservatives, do you think Obama would be singing the same tune?
It may or may not be too late to chase Obama away with a stick, but we can at least decline to elect another leader who thinks America’s resources are up for grabs.
