Remember back in late 2016 when all the left-wingers in the news media were so upset about the Trump transition team getting to work on foreign policy before Trump had actually been inaugurated? Remember all the talk about bringing the Logan Act against Michael Flynn? Remember all the hand-wringing about the Trump team’s conversations with Russia during these couple of months? Remember how we were told repeatedly that “we only have one president at a time”?
Of course you remember.
But you know who doesn’t? MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell, who came on the airwaves all a-flutter on Wednesday to tell viewers that Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is over in the Middle East pushing the Trump administration’s “anti-Iran,” “pro-Israel” foreign policy agenda. The implication was clear: Pompeo and Trump should sit down, shut up, and let Joe Biden’s people take it from here. In other words: The exact opposite message from what we heard after the 2016 election.
“Also, new sanctions against Iran today, again, making it harder for the president incoming to unwind the Iran nuclear deal because there’s a lot more that he’s gonna have to figure out with Iran to even get back to square one if he wants to reset relations with Europeans and with Iran in the Middle East,” Mitchell lamented.
In a conversation with White House correspondent Kristen Welker, Mitchell elaborated on her outrage.
“Mike Pompeo is in Israel today doubling down on their, you know anti-Palestinian posture,” she said. “What do they do about all of this?”
“Well, I think you’re absolutely right, and that is why you see so much frustration among Democrats on Capitol Hill and among those who are close to President-Elect Biden,” said Welker.
Aww, Democrats are frustrated? That’s sad.
Later, she brought on former CIA Director John Brennan, who was only too happy to buy into Mitchell’s case against Trump having any say whatsoever over foreign policy.
“I’m hoping there will be no activity that really is going to make it more difficult for us to try to repair the damage that has been done over the last four years in terms of Donald Trump’s actions on Middle East policies,” Brennan grumbled.
And by “repair,” he means turn on Israel, extend the hand of friendship to Iran, put ourselves back into the disastrous nuclear deal, and, hey, who knows, maybe start another war or two for good measure. The Establishment is back, ladies and gentlemen, and they are ready to pick right up where they left off.
