Anti-Islam Billboard Infuriates Liberals
An anti-Islam billboard in St. Augustine, FL has inspired what the UK’s Daily Mail is calling “international outrage.” Before you get your hopes up for angry statements from world leaders, relax: it’s just ordinary slacktivists signing an online petition under varying forms of anonymity. Still, the billboard certainly outraged some of them, particularly the petitioner herself, Becky Williams.
Just listen to her harrowing tale:
“I was driving down the A1A with my daughter when I saw the ‘Islam Bloody Islam, Doomed by Its Doctrine’ billboard,” Williams wrote. “I was horrified that something so hateful would be put up in my community. No one should be forced to see this offensive message on their way to work or school or just going about their day.
“We should always stand up for those in our community who are shown hatred and intolerance,” she continued. “This billboard is not representative of how the people in St. Augustine feel about our Muslim neighbors. It is of the utmost importance that we join together in standing against messages and movements that isolate, judge, and threaten an entire community of people who share our same hometown.”
The petition, which calls on either the city or the billboard company to take the sign down, had collected 15,800 signatures as of Wednesday afternoon.
If you ever wanted to feel glum about the future of America, peruse some of the comments. Here’s a sample to whet your appetite:
“It should be removed because Islam doesn’t promote violence, on the contrary it promotes peace, like Christianity and Judaism.”
Oh, of course it does! It’s just a coincidence that it’s the only one of the three religions to attract extremists who kill themselves in suicide attacks on innocent civilians. Somehow, thousands and thousands of Muslims never get around to reading all of those peaceful passages from the Quran. Or maybe they are so addled by the effects of global warming that they can’t think straight. Yeah, that’s the ticket.
“This sign does nothing to me personally; but it is very scary that inciting hate against Muslims or any other group is becoming so tolerable in the United States.”
Yes, anyone who has been paying attention for the last ten years can tell you that the U.S. is getting more tolerant of people who criticize Muslims. Why, you can’t get through an issue of the New York Times without reading another op-ed about how destructive Islam is. Are you kidding?
And then there’s this one, which is so idiotic that it’s hard to believe it was written by an adult. Or a child. Or a human being. In fact, it’s easier to swallow this comment if we imagine it was written by a dog of below-average intelligence:
Lovely. When the people already believe that certain forms of speech are illegal, the government should have no trouble making it so.
Obama once said that ISIS was not an “existential threat” to America. And he was right.
Liberals on the other hand…
