Big Three Networks Completely Ignore Amazing October Jobs Report
Last Friday saw the release of yet another astoundingly positive jobs report from the Labor Department, but none of the Big 3 networks saw fit to give the report even a second’s worth of time on their nightly news broadcasts. Despite going to great lengths to cover positive economic news during the Obama era (and even taking creative liberties when it came to reporting those figures), neither ABC nor NBC nor CBS thought that Friday’s report merited so much as a mention.
Making this an especially egregious omission was the fact that October’s job growth far exceeded economists’ predictions, that black unemployment hit an all-time record low, and total employment reached 158.5 million, which is also a record number.
But since this could be read as telling America that President Trump is actually doing a good job, the networks just couldn’t bring themselves to share the news with the country.
Hmm, well…maybe there was just too much going on?
NewsBusters reports, you decide:
— ABC’s World News Tonight typically led with weather (“powerful, deadly storms” in the Northeast) and wildfires in California. Anchor David Muir offered the usual local stories: the robbery of a Brinks truck outside of a bank in Colorado, a stabbing in Utah where the 911 softward broke down, and a woman killed with a spear, with “police in Florida pouring over audio recordings from this couple’s Amazon Echo Dot devices as part of a bizarre murder investigation.”
— CBS Evening News led with impeachment, and then followed with a story on Trump saying he’s moving his state of residence to Florida. They made time for full stories on a seven-year-old girl being shot trick-or-treating in Chicago, and a 19-year-old woman going missing in Alabama.
— NBC Nightly News copied the ABC formula, leading with weather and wildfires. NBC offered a whole story on the latest on actress Lori Loughlin’s legal troubles over college admissions, the Utah stabbing/911 controversy, and a whole story on the death of Saoirse Kennedy Hill, Robert F. Kennedy’s 22-year-old granddaughter, being ruled a drug overdose.
All three networks, NewsBusters noted, made time to cover Beto O’Rourke’s newly-cancelled presidential campaign.
Sigh, they’re just so damn obvious about it.
