The Council on American-Islamic Relation, a Muslim group that is unlikely to wield the kind of power over the Donald Trump administration as they did over the current president, is calling on Trump to dis-invite Rev. Franklin Graham from Friday’s inauguration ceremony.
In a press release, CAIR said that Graham was a “notorious Islamophobe” who had no business speaking at the event.
“If President-elect Trump truly seeks to unite our nation as he promised in his acceptance speech, he will limit the list of those offering prayers at the inauguration to religious leaders who work to bring us together, not to create divisions between faiths,” said CAIR’s Nihad Awad. “Rev. Graham’s ill-informed and extremist views are incompatible with the Constitution and with American values of religious liberty and inclusion.”
Remarkably, CAIR is making this statement at a time when Graham’s charity – Samaritan’s Purse – is putting the finishing touches on a field hospital in Iraq:
Franklin Graham officially dedicated the Samaritan’s Purse emergency field hospital in Iraq today. The 50-bed trauma unit is located on the Plains of Nineveh and is designed to treat those injured in the battle between Iraqi and coalition forces and ISIS militants in Mosul. An estimated 3,000 people a day are now fleeing the city—a number of whom have sustained life-threatening injuries from the conflict.
Graham’s efforts were applauded by humanitarian leaders in the United Nations. Lise Grande of the U.N. said the organization searched high and low for charities who could provide frontline care for Iraqi Muslim soldiers.
“We’ve reached out to a number of organizations, asking, begging them to step forward,” she said. “Dr. Graham, Samaritan’s Purse answered that call. We can’t thank you enough. You built this hospital in record time. Most of all we want to thank you for saving people. Because Samaritan’s Purse is here, thousands—tens of thousands—of people will survive.”
If the definition of Islamophobia is: Tell the truth about the extremist elements of the religion while simultaneously rescuing thousands of the religion’s adherents…we’d say there is absolutely no shame in suffering from Islamophobia. In fact, the Muslim world would probably prefer to see this “fear” spread!
But the Muslims who profit from division and victimhood and, well, terrorism, will continue to do what they do best. It doesn’t matter how many people are killed – Muslim and non – in the meantime.
