It’s been a long-running pastime to joke about the “no duh” nature of a lot of scientific studies, but sometimes it helps to have a study that confirms – in exacting detail – what everyone already knows. No one can possibly argue that President Trump has been treated fairly by the mainstream media, but in case there is still anyone out there who wants to pretend that “liberal media bias” is just a thing conservatives whine about to avoid the issues, Harvard University is here to get your mind right.
According to a study by Harvard’s Shorenstein Center on Media, Politics, and Public Policy, Trump has been treated FAR worse than his three immediate presidential predecessors. The academics took 10 major television and print news outlets and analyzed their coverage of Trump’s first 100 days in the White House. Their findings – that the media is biased against Trump – are not surprising, of course. But even those who have seen through the gauze of the media’s hatred may be shocked at just how overwhelming that hatred really is.
The Harvard scientists looked at these 10 organizations: The New York Times, the Washington Post, the Wall Street Journal, the UK’s Financial Times, CNN, NBC, CBS, Fox News, the BBC, and German public broadcasting. And in every single instance, the coverage of Trump’s fledgling administration was weighted to the negative. Only in Fox News’s case did the coverage attain anything close to objective parity. On Fox, the coverage was only 52% negative. The channel that’s constantly mocked for its “fair and balanced” motto…is the ONLY channel that’s ACTUALLY fair and balanced!
Liberals have also blasted the Wall Street Journal for their pro-Trump op-ed section, but how did this bastion of conservatism perform in the study? Why, they were only negative towards Trump in 70% of their coverage! Wow, what shills.
But hey, compared to CNN and NBC, whose Trump coverage is NINETY-THREE PERCENT negative, the Wall Street Journal is practically the media arm of the White House these days.
The rest of the outlets were similarly awful in their blatant bias: CBS’s coverage has been 91% negative, the NYT 87%, WaPo 83%, FT 84%, and the BBC 74%. The worst of all was Germany’s ARD outlet, whose Trump coverage is a whopping 98% negative.
Of course, in Germany it’s probably considered “hate speech” to write anything positive about Trump.
At this rate, it may not be long before the same applies to the U.S.
