Chicago Mayor: Trump’s Sanctuary City Threats are “a Joke”
Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel said Tuesday that he was not worried about Attorney General Jeff Sessions’ threat to stop handing money over to sanctuary cities.
“I find it a little ironic. They said they were gonna cut or withhold monies on public safety. Did you look at the president’s budget that he introduced? He actually cut the Justice Department. So this is kind of like, in my view, a bit of a joke in that sense,” Emanuel said at a press conference.
Emanuel, who has had a long personal and professional relationship with Barack Obama, said that Chicago and 34 other cities had already pledged to fight any attempt the administration might make to defund sanctuary cities.
“We’re very clear about our values and very clear about our priorities. And if you looked at any of the cases, you would also see that we think we have a strong argument that they can’t do what they’re claiming they’re gonna do,” Emanuel said.
Chicago claims to be in compliance with federal law, but Emanuel reiterated his commitment to keep the city friendly to illegal immigrants.
“Chicago has been and will be a welcoming city because people that come to Chicago — make the sacrifice, the struggle, the journey — are believing in a better tomorrow, and they’re part of keeping the American dream alive. Just like my grandfather 100 years ago and my father 70 years ago,” he said.
Oh god, how can anyone listen to that – much less say it – while simultaneously suppressing their gag reflex? We can only guess that these liberal Democrats have more than a little practice in that area, not that there’s anything wrong with that, etc.
This is not about your damn grandparents and their noble journey to forge a better life for themselves. It’s about recognizing some facts. Fact One: We already have plenty of violent, and/or welfare-dependent criminals who are American citizens. Fact Two: We don’t have an obligation to import them from other countries. Fact Three: You don’t get Fact Three, because the first two are enough.
On the campaign trail, Donald Trump started with a full deportation force and a promise to remove every single illegal immigrant in the country. As president, he has whittled that back to merely deporting criminals…i.e., the same “policy” followed by the Obama administration. The same administration, by the way, that created DOJ guidance giving the federal government the authority to compel sanctuary cities to comply with immigration authorities. Only difference: Trump’s actually doing it. The other difference: He’s “TRUMP THE MONSTER” and Democrats have to oppose him for sport and profit.
For that, liberals like Emanuel are willing to endanger their own citizens, and that’s disgusting.
