CNN contributor Steve Cortes is one of the few pro-Trump personalities that has managed to maintain an on-air presence at the cable network, but those days may be soon coming to an end. After Cortes accused primetime anchor Chris Cuomo of spouting “fake news” about President Trump’s supposed racism towards Hispanics, we wouldn’t be surprised if the powers-that-be decide he’d be better off waiting out his contract at home. CNN doesn’t mind having a Trump supporter on every now and again to beat up on, but when they hit a little too close to the truth? That’s when they have to go.
On Cuomo’s program Tuesday night, the host was discussing Trump’s New Mexico rally, in which the president went out of his way to court Hispanic voters. How was it, Cuomo asked Cortes, that Trump could claim to “love Latinos” after saying “so many anti-Mexican” and “anti-Puerto Rican” things?
Cortes fielded the question easily.
“This president has simply been an amazing leader for Hispanics,” Cortes said. “I think a lot of Hispanics look at Donald Trump and they may say, ‘Look, I would like him if he phrased things differently.'”
No no, Cuomo insisted. Trump had “denigrated” the Hispanic community, he said. And frankly, his support in the community isn’t that high – he’s got a “third of them at best.”
“Put that in context,” Cortes replied. “A third of them, Chris, is incredible compared to expectations.”
“For someone who says bigoted things about them, maybe,” Cuomo scoffed.
That’s when Cortes lowered the boom.
“No, he does not say bigoted things,” Cortes said. “That is not true. That is fake news for you to say that. What’s bigoted is turning border security into a racial issue when it’s not. America is not a race, so by protecting America, you are protecting Americans of every color, whether they are brown or black or purple. But what has the media done on a consistent basis? It’s trying to make his tough border policies inherently or systemically racist.”
This would have been an excellent time for a sober-minded, objective journalist – or even a pundit with a shred of intellectual honesty – to take a step back and say, “Hmm, you do make some good points.”
But obviously, in this case, we’re talking about someone who is none of those things.
“Because he has depicted the people who are coming to the border as savages who are bombarding the gate,” whined Fredo.
“Some of them are,” Cortes said. “Some of them are, Chris, and we know that.”
Well, “we” know that. Not so sure about Chris Cuomo’s CNN viewers. Who can even speculate on what they might or might not “know”?
