According to a new story from CNN, President Trump’s immigration policies are making America a more dangerous place at the border. Because Trump administration officials are denying asylum claims from migrants, they are “forcing” those migrants into the hands of the smugglers and the cartels, thus worsening a situation that the administration is purportedly trying to improve.
Get a load of this:
President Donald Trump has said that he wants immigration policy that secures the border. But his aggressive policy has instead resulted in organized crime groups preying on droves of desperate asylum seekers who have been turned away by US authorities, according to people familiar with the smuggling operations.
Experts said the administration’s now-reversed policy of prosecuting parents who cross the border illegally — thus separating children from their families — and the elimination of domestic violence and gang violence as grounds for asylum is having another result: Further strengthening ties between human smugglers, other organized crime groups and corrupt local law enforcement along the border.
“Ironically, these policies that claim to be trying to clamp down and secure the border and stop smuggling and stop traffickers… actually empower the traffickers, the cartels, the smugglers,” says Michelle Brané, director of the Migrant Rights and Justice program at the Women’s Refugee Commission.
So, a few things.
One, color us shocked that CNN finds fault with Trump immigration policy. The day that network publishes a positive story about this administration will be the day the cows come home from Jupiter.
Two, let’s face some facts here. The Trump administration is not enforcing the president’s policies on immigration, full stop. They can’t, because Democrats (and no small number of Republicans) are standing in obstruction of that agenda on Capitol Hill. They’ve been offered amnesty for Dreamers. They’ve been offered this and that. They won’t budge on the one Trump immigration policy that matters most, which is building a long, impenetrable, physical WALL across the southern border.
And of course, the obstruction goes well beyond that. First, family separations got thrown out. Then family detention was thrown out. Finally, a judge decided that Trump couldn’t even deport these families (many of which are not friggin’ “families” at all). And that’s just one example of many where lawmakers and activist judges are standing in the way of this president actually enforcing U.S. immigration law. Don’t even get us started on sanctuary cities, grants to those cities, the Abolish ICE movement, the travel ban debacle, environmental lawsuits against construction of the wall, the refusal to budge on chain migration, and all the rest.
So while the situation at the border may be getting worse for this reason or that one, don’t even TRY to lay the blame on President Trump. If he were allowed to actually implement his agenda – the one the American people voted overwhelmingly for in November 2016 – the border would be a much different place right now.
Somehow we’re guessing CNN would find fault with that as well.
