School officials at Western Washington University have obviously learned something valuable from the controversies at Princeton, Claremont McKenna, and the University of Missouri. Want to keep your job? Then there’s no reaction too swift or strong when it comes to dealing with anything that might be construed as racism. Best to get out in front of it. Hell, shut down the school if you have to.
Well, that’s what Western Washington officials did. After some yahoos made racist remarks on social media last week, the school decided to cancel classes a day early and send students home for Thanksgiving break.
“We take the feelings of safety of our students very, very seriously,” said school president Bruce Shepard.
Not the actual safety, mind you. The feelings of safety. Shepard must be a true believer.
The social media remarks were made anonymously and no one can even say if they were made by students at the college. They were directed at nearly every minority in existence, and they seemed to be driven by anger over the school mascot. Apparently there has been some discussion lately about the Western Washington Viking and how awful it is to have a white European man as the school’s defining symbol.
But isn’t that racist as well? To attack a mascot just because he’s white?
No, because you can never be racist against white people. Ever.
The AP interviewed Patrick Eckroth, a senior who thinks the university has a serious racism problem. “The idea of having a critical conversation about our mascot and the reaction to that is a great illustration of the problem we have not just in our university, but in society,” said Eckroth.
You can say that again.
That problem, in a nutshell, is that today’s college liberals believe they are on campus to tear down anything that might suggest that white people have ever done anything that wasn’t completely evil and racist. Because of slavery. Because of Jim Crow.
Vikings? Racist. White presidents? Racist. Founding Fathers? Racist. Confederate flags? Racist. American flags? Racist. White school officials who don’t speak “social justice language”? Racist!
There is no need to have a “critical conversation” about the damn mascot. You’re a senior, for God’s sake. Next year, you’re going to be out in the real world. You don’t have much time left to grow up. You and anyone else who is out there protesting about inane things like this: focus on what’s important in life. You’re not going to get a do-over. This is it.
My God, what are these colleges teaching these poor kids?
