Hillary Clinton’s poll numbers are sinking like the Titanic, causing panic and disarray not only within the Democratic Party but the Republican establishment as well. But for all the doomsayers predicting that Hillary’s path to the White House might actually be twisting towards a desolate cliff, there is one individual who isn’t worried at all: President Barack Obama.
Well, that’s what we wants us to believe, anyway. Obama appeared in New York City on Sunday to rally liberal millionaires, speaking before a crowd of about 65 people at the home of restaurateur Danny Meyer. There, while extolling the virtues of Hillary and laying another series of insults against Donald Trump, Obama said he was still confident in victory.
The American people, he said, will “make a good decision and we’re going to win this thing.”
Hillary Clinton, Obama said, was everything the country needed in a president.
“This is somebody who is smart, who is tough and, most importantly, cares deeply about making sure that this country works for everybody and not just a few,” Obama said. “And she’s displayed it again and again and again. And when I said that I think she is somebody who is as qualified as any individual who has ever run for office, I meant it.”
Obama then turned his attention to her opponent.
“And then there’s the other guy,” he said. “You all know him because he’s from New York. Some of you may have done business with him. If you have, it doesn’t sound like it’s been a pleasant experience.”
Obama said that it wasn’t just Trump’s business reputation that was making this a tight race.
“There’s a reason why we haven’t had a woman president,” he said. “We as a society still grapple with what it means to see powerful women and it still troubles us in a lot of ways, unfairly.”
So, if you’re keeping up, here’s what Obama thinks. Hillary will be president. But maybe not, because there’s all of this sexism. And it won’t happen if black voters “personally insult” Obama by turning their backs on Hillary. And it’s going to be a close, because America is structurally divided. But it’s going to be Hillary, because the American people know better than to elect Trump. Does that about cover it?
We might think that Obama is due for a long vacation…but damn…it hasn’t been that long since the last one.
