Cowardly Democrats Back Down From Ilhan Omar Condemnation
For three solid years, liberal pundits, elected Democrats, and others in the media/Democratic Party alliance have spent their days and night bashing the Republican Party for losing its moral way in the universe. At every opportunity, they have put the harsh glare of the spotlight on Paul Ryan, Mitch McConnell, Lindsey Graham, Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio, Hugh Hewitt, and every other conservative star, demanding to know why they do not speak out at Donald Trump’s latest “outrage.” This, they told us time and again, was proof of the GOP’s win-at-all-costs mentality. They were willing to sell their souls down the river if it meant retaining power. If it meant “owning the libs.”
Well, well, well.
Over the past month, Rep. Ilhan Omar, one of the first Muslim congresswomen in the history of the United States, has made a number of disturbing anti-Semitic remarks in which she has questioned why American politicians might choose to support Israel. In one, she infamously insinuated they were being bought off by Aipac. In another, she cast aspersions on a system that would require her to pledge her loyalty to a foreign country. Both of these were met with condemnation from critics, including Jewish Americans, who found the remarks rife with longstanding anti-Semitic tropes.
Omar was conciliatory and apologetic the first time around; the second, she dug her heels in and refused to back down. This led House Democratic leaders to develop a resolution in which anti-Semitism would be roundly condemned. While the resolution would not mention Omar by name, it would clearly be crafted in such a way that it would be obvious that it was referring to her.
But after a backlash from Omar’s buddies, including the one and only Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Nancy Pelosi and the other Democrats in the leadership backed off the resolution.
“It is shameful that House Democrats won’t take a stronger stand against Anti-Semitism in their conference,” tweeted President Trump. “Anti-Semitism has fueled atrocities throughout history and it’s inconceivable they will not act to condemn it!”
Omar’s defenders say there is nothing anti-Semitic about criticizing Israel, which is obvious and true. Close observers will note that Omar is not alone in criticizing the Israeli government for the way they’ve handled the Palestinian situation. Not by a long shot. She is alone, however, is being condemned – again and again – for making anti-Semitic slurs. Why is that? Is it because she’s a poor, picked-on Muslim girl? Or is it because she strayed from criticizing the Israeli government’s policies and into a thorny series of insults about the patriotism of Americans who support Israel?
Well, the cowardly Democrats are backing down, and we will bide our time until Omar says something else to insult an entire ethno-religious group. We’re sure it won’t be long. The only question is whether the Democratic Party will tolerate it, condemn it, or, as we suspect might soon be the case, defend it.
