According to a new story in the Washington Post, a group called Free the Delegates – a conservative initiative to get delegates pledged to Donald Trump to abandon their pledge at the Republican National Convention – has already attracted the support of nearly 400 delegates. The goal: to change the rules of this year’s convention so that delegates will be free to vote their “conscience” instead of voting for Trump.
While the group’s co-founder, Kendal Unruh, admits that their ploy will cause chaos at the convention, she believes that it will ultimately prove to be the salvation of the Republican Party.
“Long-term, this saves the party and we will win the election,” Unruh told the Post. “Everything has to go through birthing pains to birth something great. We’re going to go through the trauma of the birthing pains, but the reward will be worth it.”
Damn, it’s sad to see people so blind to reality.
There’s no question that Free the Delegates could end up stealing the nomination away from Trump in Cleveland. The RNC is a private organization, and the rules are written anew every four years. If this movement gains enough traction, the delegates can nominate Ted Cruz, Jeb Bush, Paul Ryan, or anyone else they deem a better choice than Trump.
But it won’t “save the party”. And their chosen nominee will certainly not win the election.
In fact, there’s a very good chance that this scheme will not only cost Republicans the election in November, it could doom the GOP to a long period of national obsolescence. You think nominating a former liberal would be a hit to conservatism? Try sending a message to voters that they needn’t bother showing up to any future primaries. This would make the DNC’s superdelegate system look like the very essence of democracy. It would validate everything Trump has said about the rigged system.
Republican leaders in Congress, RNC officials, and influential conservatives need to do everything possible to stop this ill-conceived plot from unfolding. The disastrous ramifications will go well beyond President Hillary Clinton. This could be the moment Democrats gain unchallenged control of this country for years to come.
