Dem Lawmaker Slams Impeachment in Break From His Party
In an interview with Fox News Channel’s Maria Bartiromo on Sunday, Rep. Jeff Van Drew (D-NJ) said that he was not on board with his party’s crusade to impeach President Donald Trump. Lamenting the way the inquiry is dividing the country and distracting from more important issues facing the American people, Van Drew explained why he was one of only two House Democrats to vote against Pelosi’s impeachment resolution in October.
“I just think we’ll keep going down this road, keep spending more time. Many of us came to Congress because we really wanted to accomplish goals, really work on issues such as healthcare, work on issues dealing with prescription drugs, election security, the debt, the deficit — the list goes on,” Van Drew said.
The New Jersey lawmaker said that Congress should “understand the importance” of this procedure and recognize that no president in history had ever been successfully removed from office using the impeachment mechanism.
“We’re going to have an election next year, let’s have the election, let’s fight through the election, let’s do what Republicans and Democrats and whomever else does, but this is going to get us nowhere. We’ve spent millions of dollars, in my opinion, tons of money, tons of time, tons of hurt, fracturing the nation apart. I haven’t seen this to be a good thing,” Van Drew said.
It is to the Democratic Party’s shame that they don’t have more reasonable elected officials like Jeff Van Drew. It doesn’t take much. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to understand that these proceedings are bad for the country, that they will not succeed, and that they are, at the end of the day, even foolish from a political perspective. Democrats need to win states back from Trump if they want to take back the White House next November. Do they really think the path to doing so is this farce? Do they really think the American people are buying this nonsense?
There’s only so much the media can do to put a coat of fresh paint on this dilapidated barn. And yeah, they’re certainly trying. They’re painting their little hearts out. But voters aren’t stupid. They can smell a partisan sham when they come across it. And when you drag witness after witness to Congress to testify that…well, they didn’t actually WITNESS anything, it doesn’t bode well for your propaganda.
