Democrats Nancy Pelosi and Elijah Cummings like to talk about fake news, but they would do better to stop lecturing about it and start guarding against it themselves. Both they and The (Failing) New York Times were tricked by a fake Twitter account they assumed to belong to the now-former National Security Adviser, Michael Flynn.
The Democrats were apparently so excited about Flynn’s resignation that they left their skepticism behind while surfing social media the next day. When they came across a Twitter account belonging to @GenMikeFlynn, they missed the fact that it was not a verified account. Eagerly, they read what “Flynn” had to say about his controversial ousting.
“While I accept full responsibility for my actions, I feel it is unfair that I have been made the sole scapegoat for what happened. But if a scapegoat is what’s needed for this administration to continue to take this great nation forward, I am proud to do my duty,” the fake Michael Flynn said on Twitter.
This was just too juicy for Pelosi and Cummings to pass up. Here was Flynn, telling them exactly what they wanted to hear. He was just a patsy, as they suspected. And they marched right up to the microphones on Tuesday and used the Twitter messages to drum up support for a congressional investigation into The Russian Conspiracy.
“Madam Leader, just this morning, Flynn tweeted, and this is a quote, ‘scapegoat,’ end of quote. Scapegoat. He basically described himself as a scapegoat,” said Cummings.
Pelosi jumped in, having thought of something clever.
“I have a tweet I’m going to make, I’m telling my staff right now – it’s not scapegoat, it’s stonewall. And that’s exactly what the Republicans in Congress are doing,” the idiot said.
Ah, but even Elvis knew: Only fools rush in.
As it turns out, of course, the real Michael Flynn tweets under an entirely different (verified) account. And that account had been inactive since December. Certainly, Flynn had not made any public remarks about his resignation on social media.
Hilariously, the fake Flynn account had one more tweet for the confused Democrats:
The failing @nytimes, @NancyPelosi & @RepCummings issued statements based on 100% FAKE news. We expect more from our media & politicians!
These days, though…we really don’t.
