Democrats: “Husband” and “Wife” Now Discriminatory
You have to hand it to them. When liberal Democrats decide to sink their teeth into an issue, they go for broke. Anyone who thought the Supreme Court’s decision on gay marriage would be enough to mollify the LGBT militants had better think again. The landmark victory has only emboldened America’s liberals, and now they are ready to drive the final nail in the old, homophobic ways of a (once?) great civilization.
First stop? The traditional terms that are only appropriate for traditional marriage. See, the left believes it’s time for bigoted words like “husband” and “wife” to join the Confederate flag in a museum somewhere. Rep. Lois Capps of California has introduced a bill that would replace these words with gender-neutral language like “spouse” and “married couple” in all official federal documents.
“The Amend the Code for Marriage Equality Act recognizes that the words in our laws have meaning and can continue to reflect prejudice and discrimination even when rendered null by our highest courts,” Capps said. “Our values as a country are reflected in our laws. I authored this bill because it is imperative that our federal code reflect the equality of all marriages.”
First, it takes a lot of gall for any Democrat to come out with the “words have meaning” catchphrase at this late date. If that were true, then the Supreme Court would have had no choice but to uphold state bans on gay marriage. Since, you know, marriage is the union of one man and one woman. But apparently words only have meaning when Democrats see an opportunity to use that philosophy to their advantage.
Second, shouldn’t we wait to see how all of this plays out before we start amending the federal dictionary? We don’t want to have to do this every other year, do we? Let’s just wait until we see what sorts of “marriages” become legal in the next few years. We don’t want to leave out polygamists, after all. “Married couple” sounds like it might be offensive to trios and quartets. “Married persons,” maybe? Oh, but what about those who have their sights set on marrying an animal? Hmm, yes. We should just wait.
It should astound Americans that the left now has to make such dramatic changes to our cultural vernacular. It isn’t as though the F-word for gays is in our nation’s lawbooks. These are meaningful terms that have stood for thousands of years. But somehow, they aren’t good enough anymore. That alone should tell you that we’re off in the looney bin.
