The leadership in the Democratic Party is finally coming around to the realization that it would be political suicide to shut down the government for no other reason than to protect illegal immigrants from deportation.
After promising earlier in the year to go to any lengths necessary to make sure that Obama’s Dreamers got congressional amnesty, Democrats are now “backing away” from that pledge, according to a new story from the Washington Post. Though dozens of Democrats had promised to make their spending bill vote contingent on a Dream Act vote, many of those in conservative districts are now seeing the folly in that plan. The folly being that while amnesty remains an important part of the party’s platform (for some reason), it still isn’t particularly popular with moderate Democrat voters.
“We’ve got to get it done, but I’m not drawing a line in the sand that it has to be this week versus two weeks from now,” said Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.), who faces reelection next year in a state that Trump won by more than 18 points. Other Democrats facing similar head winds echoed that sentiment, including Sens. Joe Manchin III (D-W.Va.) and Joe Donnelly (D-Ind.). Trump won those states by 42 and 19 percentage points, respectively.
Their reluctance to enact legislation protecting “dreamers” has exposed a rift among Democrats, with immigration advocates staging protests this week and accusing some Democrats of taking the party’s Latino supporters for granted.
Well…can you blame them? If you’re a Latino who supports Democrats because you find the Trump line on illegal immigration to be too conservative…are you really going to jump parties if the Democrats don’t shut down the government over DACA? Of course not. It’s silly to even imagine such a proposition coming to light. Hispanic voters who believe it’s somehow evil to enforce America’s border laws (and this does not, by any means, describe all Hispanic voters) will NEVER come back to the Republican Party – at least not as long as Donald Trump is the nominal head of American conservatism. Democrats literally have nothing to fear, except for the fact that they may lose future voters simply because…well…they won’t be in the country!
To be honest, we’re as disappointed as the Latino activists. We had really hoped that Democrats would hold the line on this, force a shutdown, and prove, once and for all, that Americans do not consider amnesty for illegal immigrants THAT much of a priority. Yes, there are plenty of lefties who see it as a major issue, but they are far and away the minority. Let’s let it play out in the polls. Let’s watch the Democrats sink their 2018 chances by going all out for people who should not even be in this country! Oh, it could have been a beautiful sight to see.
Alas, they woke up at the last minute. Republicans should remember their cowardice when it comes time to actually bring DACA up for a vote, and they should make sure they wring everything they can out of the Democrats for even the POSSIBILITY of a so-called “Dream Act.” There’s no good reason not to.
