Democrats have assured us on a daily basis that there is nothing in this world they care more about than the 800,000 federal workers who are either sitting at home or working without a paycheck during the longest shutdown in U.S. history. No, they don’t care enough about these workers to pony up a relatively-insignificant amount of money for President Trump’s border wall, and no, they don’t even care enough about them to negotiate with the White House in good faith. But they certainly care enough about them to use their plight as a political cudgel in emails to donors and interviews with cable television outlets!
Hey, Democrats, maybe if you care so much about these suffering workers, you should have donated your Puerto Rico vacation funds to them instead of jetting off to the island for a showing of “Hamilton”!
Because as of Monday, that is where approximately 30 Democrats are. Traveling there with a contingent of families and Washington lobbyists, Democrats like Sen. Bob Menendez and Rep. Julian Castro are enjoying some fun in the sun while the shutdown drags on into its fourth week.
The trip was sponsored by the Congressional Hispanic Caucus’s BOLD PAC, which gives you a sense of how important Hispanics in the Democratic Party find the illegal immigration crisis.
“As our Bold PAC members make their way to Puerto Rico for this important weekend — the largest contingency of House Democrats to visit Puerto Rico where they’ll be hearing from Commonwealth and local elected officials about the ongoing recovery efforts — we will be closely monitoring the situation in Washington,” Bold PAC Chair Rep. Tony Cardenas said in a statement. “If there is any progress by Senate Republicans or the White House to reopen the federal government, then we will act accordingly.”
Like how? Have an extra margarita on the beach?
“Democrats in Congress are so alarmed about federal workers not getting paid they’re partying on the beach instead of negotiating a compromise to reopen the government and secure the border,” White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders tweeted on Sunday.
She was joined by GOP Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel, who wrote: “While [President Trump] is in DC working to resolve the government shutdown and secure our border, Democrats are hitting the beach and partying with lobbyists.”
Ah, just imagine how incensed the media would be if Trump snuck off the Mar-a-Lago or his golf club in Bedminster for even an HOUR during the shutdown. But since we’re talking about Democrats here…well, you know the drill.
