Elizabeth Warren Slams Joe Biden for Raising the Wrong Kind of Money
The big news this weekend was that newly-declared Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden outdid everyone else in the race with his fundraising in the first 24 hours. Biden raised a staggering $6.3 million before the first day was through, indicating that he will be the man to beat in the nomination fight.
But while any candidate would be jealous of that kind of first-day haul, at least one of Biden’s challengers found the money – or, more specifically, its source – to be unseemly. Self-styled progressive hero Elizabeth Warren sent out an email to supporters claiming that the only reason Biden was able to raise that much money was because he was cozying up to the corporate interests that she was proudly distancing herself from.
“In the first 24 hours of his presidential campaign (welcome to the race!), Joe Biden raised $6.3 million,” the email said. “How did Joe Biden raise so much money in one day? Well, it helps that he hosted a swanky private fundraiser for wealthy donors at the home of the guy who runs Comcast’s lobbying shop.”
Comcast executive David Cohen and health insurance executive Daniel Hilferty were among those in attendance at the fundraiser.
“Elizabeth is building a grassroots movement without holding any big-money private fundraisers where you can only talk to her if you write a big check first. Without taking a dime from federally registered lobbyists or PACs of any kind. It’s the right thing to do,” the email noted.
While Warren neglects to mention that only about $700,000 of Biden’s haul came from that fundraiser, it is relevant to note that without it, he wouldn’t have beaten Beto O’Rourke’s record total of $6.1 million in first-day fundraising. Then again, a lot of O’Rourke’s money came from Hollywood, so it’s not like either of them are depending on the average guy’s passion for their politics.
This is going to be one hell of a primary, though. These Democrats are going to tear each other to shreds by the time everything is said and done, and it’s going to expose the deep cracks in their party’s tenuous alliance. This was obvious from the moment Biden threw his hat into the ring, only to be met with a caustic statement from Justice Democrats, the progressive group responsible for putting Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in Congress.
And in response to Biden’s fundraising total, they tweeted: “Imagine how many more candidates like AOC, Ayanna Pressley, Ilhan Omar, and Rashida Tlaib we could elect with that kind of money.”
It’s almost enough to make you want to donate a couple of bucks to Uncle Joe out of spite.
On the other hand, the further this party goes down the whackadoo rabbit hole, the better it is for us. Keep on crazying, crazies.
