You’d have to scour the nation to find a billionaire with less in common with President Trump than Microsoft mogul Bill Gates, but even a man with the liberal sensibilities of Gates understands that Europe cannot continue down the path of self-destruction they’re currently on. In an interview with Germany’s Welt am Sonntag newspaper, the tech mastermind warned that Northern African immigration with be the ruin of the European Union if countries do not start taking the threat seriously.
Gates made the comments as EU leaders are hunkering down to decide what to do about a problem they spent many years encouraging. New African migrants are reaching the shores of Italy on a weekly basis, and Roman officials are pleading with others in the EU alliance to open their doors to the flood of immigrants so Italy does not have to bear the brunt of the influx.
Gates told the paper that a recent population explosion in Africa would inevitably result in “enormous pressure” on European nations if they did not meet the challenge by sending more money to aid development in these third-world countries. He called on the rest of the EU to follow Germany’s example and commit to sending a bigger fraction of their GDP to foreign aid.
While that may sound like a familiar song from Gates, who has devoted his life to charitable humanitarian outreach, he then struck a note that sounded more like Marine Le Pen than Silicon Valley.
“On the one hand you want to demonstrate generosity and take in refugees, but the more generous you are, the more word gets around about this — which in turn motivates more people to leave Africa,” Gates said. “Germany cannot possibly take in the huge, massive number of people who are wanting to make their way to Europe. Europe must make it more difficult for Africans to reach the continent via the current transit routes.”
We’ll stand by while American slacktivists accuse Gates of turning into a white supremacist.
Of course, you don’t have to be a nationalist – or even a conservative – to see the facts as they are. These European countries, even if they don’t care a whit about their national identity, simply cannot afford to open their doors to every “refugee” who washes up on their shores. It may not “feel” nice to send them away or prevent them entry, but they literally have no choice.
