On this week’s episode of the rebooted “Murphy Brown” sitcom, viewers were treated to a situation where Brown sneaks into the White House press briefing so that she can lambast Press Secretary Sarah Sanders as a liar. Oh, and the episode introduced a DACA student into the mix, just in case the Sanders storyline wasn’t enough to engage liberals who are hungry for anti-Trump content.
For all the heat the “Roseanne” reboot took from people on the left, imagine if it had been the right-wing equivalent of “Murphy Brown,” filled with pro-Trump content from beginning to end. The truth is that the pro-Trump parts of Roseanne were sparse and extremely mild compared to what is regularly seen on EVERY SINGLE PIECE OF ENTERTAINMENT when it comes to anti-Trump jokes and storylines. And Murphy Brown has taken it to a new level – possibly even worse than the rebooted “Will and Grace.”
Anyway, so the gist of the scene was that Brown snuck into the press briefing for the sole purpose of standing up and delivering the following, red-meat-for-leftists speech to Sanders.
“The role of the White House Press Secretary is to create transparency in the government and tell the American people the truth, but that’s not what happens in this room,” Brown says in the episode. “Whether it’s about a meeting with Russians in Trump Tower or a made-up mandate that requires separation between parents and their children at the border, it all comes down to the same thing, so here’s my question — why do you lie?”
Brown’s monologue is interspersed with real-life scenes of Sanders interacting and the other actors playing the press pool. You know, so we can at least pretend this isn’t just a bunch of Hollywood writers lecturing the American people.
“And how demoralizing is it for us to be called the enemy of the people?” Brown continues. “I mean, how do we go back to our newspapers and our magazines and our networks knowing that the most basic principle of journalistic integrity — to report the facts — is totally out of reach? If we can’t get to the truth, why are we even here?”
Brown then tries to organize a walkout, but no one gets up. Apparently this is meant as a jab at the cowardice of the Washington media, which is absolutely hilarious. Liberals actually believe that the political mainstream press doesn’t push back hard enough on this administration! Apparently they won’t be satisfied until Jim Acosta actually gets up and punches Sarah Sanders in the face. Which, with the way that clown behaves, is almost surely going to happen one of these days.
In any event, like we said, even the liberal TV critic’s establishment hates this reboot. Rolling Stone, which has about as much appreciation for Trump as Hillary Clinton does, said the new Murphy Brown suffers from a “sense of preachy self-importance that permeates the entire revival.” The New York Times said the show “prefers applause to laughs” and was “combining dated sitcom rhythms with sermonizing.”
The new Murphy Brown is a political lecture masquerading as a sitcom. What could be more boring?
