You sometimes have to wonder what kind of world liberals grew up in. Did the voters who cast their ballots for Obama spend their childhoods in a plastic bubble, crying every time someone offended them? Did their parents scour their schoolbooks and movies for anything that could be construed as racist, sexist, or offensive to cats?
The latest manufactured controversy from the left comes out of Norfolk, Nebraska, where a float in the Fourth of July parade has bleeding hearts all in a tizzy. Apparently political satire is where these libs draw the line. Well, at least when it comes to President Obama. The object of offensiveness this time around is an outhouse, labeled with the title, “Obama Presidential Library.” This isn’t the most clever piece of ridicule in the world – in fact, it isn’t even original – but no one seems able to explain why it’s racist. Even so, there are plenty of people claiming that it’s just that.
In an interview with the Lincoln Journal Star, parade organizer Rick Konopasek insisted that the float was nothing more than political satire. “We don’t feel it’s right to tell someone what they can and can’t express,” he said. The paper also quoted a parade-watcher named Glory Kathurima who claimed that she was “angry and scared” about the float. “This was absolutely a racial statement,” claimed the Kenyan-born Kathurima. I suppose Kathurima expressed the same sentiment when she happened by this political cartoon from 2006, depicting the Bush Presidential Library in the same fashion.
Of course, this is just par for the course when it comes to Obama supporters these days. The smart Democrats – no, really, they’re out there – have long since abandoned the current administration, realizing that all of that hope and change was nothing more than smoke and mirrors. Most of them also do conservatives the courtesy of realizing our problem with the President stems not from racism but from a litany of failed policies and dangerous socialist rhetoric. Obama the policy-maker is not nearly as left-wing as Obama the speaker, but that’s only because the Republicans have prevented him from taking this country down that dark red rabbit hole. Again, though, none of this has anything to do with the color of his skin.
Are there racists out there who hate Obama because he’s black? Of course! But to pretend that every criticism of the man is rooted in some kind of prejudice is worse than wrong – it’s deliberately disingenuous. It is an attempt to sweep legitimate problems under the rug, attacking the right with logical fallacies that have nothing to do with the debate at hand. This business about the outhouse float is just another example of the left looking for –isms where there aren’t any. Someone pass the toilet paper.
