To hear it from President Obama, global warming is the biggest threat facing the country. Bigger than ISIS. Bigger than a recession. Bigger than even guns, his alternative top issue. But a new survey from YouGov shows that the president may be alone in that assessment. The survey, which polled 18,000 people from around the world, found that only 9.2% of Americans consider global warming their utmost concern.
28% of Americans cited terrorism as their chief issue, making it the number one answer.
The left says that oil companies and shady Republicans are responsible for keeping fossil fuels protected. Just like the NRA is wholly responsible for blocking gun control legislation. And in both cases, they’re wrong. The fact is that there’s really not much public support for these liberal causes. After being hammered with statistics and arguments and documentaries and speeches for years, Americans…just don’t care.
This enrages Democrats, who were certain that climate change would open up a whole new avenue for them politically. With the polar bear as their new mascot, they would be able to preside over the biggest expansion of the federal government in history and forever change the complexion of the free market. But no matter how many celebrities they get on their side, they can’t change the simple, underlying truth, which is that Americans are never going to trade our way of life away on baseless predictions.
What’s funny is that it didn’t have to be this way. Democrats are the ones who politicized this issue, not Republicans. There are a million ways we could have initiated a turn away from fossil fuels without putting the economy in jeopardy. Chiefly, we could have taken the reigns off the free market and allowed competition to thrive. Is there any doubt whatsoever that Americans will choose clean energy when it benefits them individually to do so?
See, it’s all well and good to preach global unity and selflessness and all of that good stuff. But it’s simply not in human nature to care about what happens 100 years after our death. Especially when the evidence is so obviously sensationalized to promote a liberal agenda. We’d all love to save the whales, save the forests, and save the penguins, but we’re not quite willing to go back to bicycles and un-air-conditioned homes to do so. And the louder Democrats get on this issue, the more suspicious Americans get.
