Hillary Clinton disappointed legions of Americans on Thursday when she returned to D.C. for a speech celebrating Harry Reid, who is retiring at the end of the congressional session. Watching the news for the last few weeks has been so refreshing without her arrogant mug all over the screen.
Speaking of news, Clinton chose to address that subject in her speech. Well, “fake news,” to be precise. Clinton said that fake news was becoming “an epidemic,” though she made no specific mention of the so-called “Pizzagate” conspiracy theory that tied her to a child sex ring. She warned that the proliferation of fictional news “can have real world consequences.”
“This is not about politics or partisanship. Lives are at risk, lives of ordinary people just trying to go about their days to do their jobs, contribute to their communities,” Clinton said. “It is a danger that must be addressed and addressed quickly.”
She called on Congress to pass legislation that would give the federal government more power to respond to “foreign propaganda.” Presumably, this was a shot at Russia, which her campaign has blamed for being responsible for her loss to Trump.
“It is imperative that leaders in both the private and pubic sector step up to protect our democracy and innocent lives,” she said.
Keep a sharp eye on this whole “fake news” narrative, because this is about much more than finding a convenient scapegoat for Hillary. They are turning this into one of the media/Democratic Party’s biggest priorities and their reaction is way out of proportion to the threat. Yes, they’re trying to draw attention away from the abject failure of the mainstream news media over the past year, but that’s only part of it.
They may also be trying to launch a sideways attack on conservative media. They can’t possibly be this worried about a few outlandish conspiracy theories or a few viral Facebook headlines. Those things are irrelevant and pointless to even talk about except from a curiosity standpoint. But conservative media is very relevant, and Democrats would not be wrong to think that it is one of their biggest enemies. Every day, stellar conservative reporting shines a light on stories that would never get a second of air time on the networks. That matters. That has an impact.
If Democrats have an opportunity to censor conservative media, they will jump at it.
