Huh? Top Democrat Says Mueller Report Could Lead to “Constitutional Crisis”
So apparently, losing the faith of your voters and setting yourself up for a 2020 election schlonging courtesy of your own failed coup against the President rises to the level of a “constitutional crisis.” This according to House Oversight Committee Chairman Elijah Cummings, who told CNN’s Chris Cuomo that he was deeply troubled by the fact that special counsel Robert Mueller has not delivered the Democrats the desired results.
“We have to have the (Mueller) report,” Cumming said, holding on to the tiniest thread of hope that they might be able to keep this hoax going for another year. “And it’s going to be very interesting to see what’s there. After all, this is a major issue for the American people and for our Congress. As a matter of fact, we could be headed towards a crisis, a constitutional crisis. So it makes sense for us to do everything in our power, that is, for [AG William] Barr to do everything in his power to expedite this matter.”
Thankfully, Cuomo was awake enough to ask Cummings what the hell he was talking about.
“If it holds up that Mr. Mueller didn’t see criminal activity in terms of the president or anyone around him participating in Russian interference, and he couldn’t make a decision on obstruction, what kind of crisis are we facing?” he asked.
Here’s Cummings’ bewildered, stumbling response: “Well, we’ve got a situation, Chris, where clearly, there are obviously, and I don’t know it to be a fact, because we haven’t seen the report, but obviously, there must be a number of facts on both sides. And at some point, we may very well come to a point where Mr. Barr, that is our attorney general, does not want to release hardly anything. That in and of itself could get us in a position where this would have to be challenged in some kind of way.”
…what?
Cummings is not known for being a particularly clear-headed thinker on the best of days, but the best we can surmise from that gobbledygook is that he wants Democrats to take whatever evidence there is for collusion and obstruction and use it as a platform upon which to investigate and campaign and bloviate on television.
Imagine if this was how we ran our criminal trials in this country. The jury acquits and then hands all the damning evidence against the defendant to some politician so they can run around yelling, “He’s guilty! He’s guilty!” with the convenience of never having to address the exculpatory evidence, nor of having to prove their case beyond a reasonable doubt.
Fact is, the Democrats got everything they wanted. They got their special counsel, they got their investigation, and they got their conclusions. It is hardly a constitutional crisis that those conclusions weren’t what they wanted them to be.
But, if they want to spend the next two years reassuring the American people that this was never about the truth at all, that’s up to them.
