House Republicans have been threatening Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein with serious corrective action for months to no avail. Despite warning, threats, and even a direct order from the White House, however, Rosenstein continues to obstruct House investigators by failing to turn over documents related to the Russia investigation. House lawmakers are constitutionally permitted to provide oversight over the Justice Department and the FBI. But at every turn, Rosenstein has turned the House into an obstacle and an enemy. This is not the way our executive branch is supposed to operate, and it’s time for someone to pay a price.
Lawmakers appear ready to make an example out of Rosenstein. According to Politico, three conservatives on Capitol Hill have told reporters that they are “putting the finishing touches on an impeachment filing even as Rosenstein announced the indictment of 12 Russian intelligence officers for interfering in the 2016 election.”
Yes, an indictment that once again failed to show even one SCRAP of evidence that Americans proactively colluded with the Kremlin, much less any evidence that Donald Trump was a part of the hacking/meddling of 2016.
See, the problem with Rosenstein and Mueller was never the investigation into Russian hacking. On that front, Mueller seems to have done a fine job rounding up Russian hackers and businessmen to indict in phony press conferences that will never result in a single trial. But hey, we’re not bitching about it. It’s just the way it is. We understand the need to go through the paces. We appreciate getting an inside look into what the Russians were up to. The more information we have, the better our chances of blocking Moscow from doing something similar in this or any other year.
No, the problem is what the Obama administration was up to INSTEAD of investigating Russians in 2016. The problem is the ludicrous conspiracy theory that says that Donald Trump, Paul Manafort, Carter Page, Don Jr., and God only knows who else were involved in some degree of “collusion” with Putin and the Russians…a full-scale assault of treason against the United States. It’s been two years, and no one can come up with any proof that this took place. We’re either talking about some of the most brilliant criminals in U.S. history…or we’re talking about an investigation that was political fiction from the start.
House Republicans are unlikely to succeed in pushing Rosenstein out of his job, but this gambit may effectively push Rosenstein to stop covering up for the DOJ, stop running interference for Mueller, and START being transparent about the FBI’s witch hunt into the Trump campaign.
