Every time the elections roll around, you get a number of well-meaning “independent-minded” folks reminding us that we should examine each candidate on the basis of his or her merits. And they seem to make a great point. Politics have turned into a bloodsport, with many Americans choosing sides the same way they might choose a favorite football team to support. It’s unlikely, after all, that a single person would look down a list of Republican platforms or Democrat platforms and agree with every single one of them. Why not abandon this “us vs. them” mentality and start voting for candidates on an individual basis?
Unfortunately, like many recommendations from the well-meaning, this one falls short in practice. Today’s Democratic Party has been hijacked by left-wing extremists. While there are plenty of politically-moderate Democrats around the country, they are swallowed by the liberal shift in the party, making them just as bad as the Obamas and Pelosis of the world.
A Vote For Liberalism
It has come to the point where a vote for a Democrat is a vote for liberalism, and that’s a vote a true conservative cannot afford to make. We are already engulfed in liberalism through various forms of penetrating media, including the news, Hollywood entertainment, and our public schools. We stand now on the verge of losing our country to an ideology that is diametrically opposed to ours. No, your local Republican candidate probably isn’t the type of conservative you’d like to see in office. Yes, the guy running on the Democratic ticket has a couple of decent ideas and seems like a cool dude. That’s not reason enough to cross party lines.
We are engaged in a war for the future of America. Those who see it as a kind of game to be won or lost aren’t entirely wrong. Except the consequences of the game are deadly serious. And unless we want to see America turn into something utterly unrecognizable within our lifetimes, we must be in it to win it. Feminism, multiculturalism, humanism, socialism…all these -isms are poised to steal everything that we hold dear about the United States. Their proponents have shown over and over again that the slippery slope fallacy is no fallacy at all.
Issues that divide conservatives like same-sex marriage and marijuana legalization are perfect examples of how the left is transforming America. Okay, so you have no problem with gays getting married. Will you be opposed to men marrying multiple wives? Men marrying animals? Will you oppose the legalization of heroin?
Critics scoff at this logic. No one’s advocating for those things, they say. Well, no one was advocating for gay marriage in a serious way twenty years ago. But here we are. These cultural shifts take us further and further away from the America we once knew, exemplifying the “progressivism” liberals celebrate. When do we dig our heels into the dirt and say, “No more”?
It is Us vs. Them, I’m afraid. To think otherwise is naivety, and being naive is a luxury we can’t afford.
