For anyone looking to have their faith restored in the FBI and the Justice Department, what happened on Friday proved that the Trump administration has set a course towards earning that faith from the American public. Attorney General Jeff Sessions ordered the termination of career FBI official Andrew McCabe, the disgraced former deputy director of the Bureau, in a stunning announcement that came just two days before McCabe was scheduled to retire with his full pension.
While the firing was lambasted by liberals as “politically motivated,” it came at the recommendation of the nonpartisan inspector general of the DOJ, who found that McCabe leaked to the press and lied to investigators about his role in helping the Clinton Foundation avoid serious scrutiny. It was a bold move by Sessions that proved his commitment to cleaning up Obama’s mess of a Justice Department and beginning a long process that may include the appointment of a second special counsel. No longer, this firing said in effect, will Trump administration officials turn a blind eye to the criminal activity that governed at least three investigations initiated by the previous administration.
While it’s important to make the distinction that McCabe’s firing did NOT originate from the president, Trump was nonetheless pleased by his attorney general’s decision. Having made his dismay with McCabe a matter of public record for months, Trump said Friday night that this was the first step towards restoring the good name of the FBI.
“Andrew McCabe FIRED, a great day for the hard working men and women of the FBI – a great day for democracy,” he tweeted. “Sanctimonious James Comey was his boss and made McCabe look like a choirboy. He knew all about the lies and corruption going on at the highest levels of the FBI!
“The Fake News is beside themselves that McCabe was caught, called out and fired,” the president continued is a subsequent tweet. “How many hundreds of thousands of dollars was given to wife’s campaign by Crooked H friend, Terry M, who was also under investigation? How many lies? How many leaks? Comey knew it all, and much more!”
McCabe, Comey, and the Democrats who are very much a part of their criminal charade have been busy casting the firing of McCabe as an ominous sign of a president looking to shut down the Russia investigation. In truth, of course, Trump DOES want to shut down that investigation, which has turned into nothing more than a partisan witch hunt…but that has little or nothing to do with McCabe’s ousting. McCabe deserved exactly what he got on Friday; he – and he alone – is responsible for whatever pension he loses or whatever damage his reputation takes as a result of this IG report.
