Speaking just after the Justice Department filed an unprecedented, explosive lawsuit against the State of California for actively obstructing the duties of federal immigration officials, Attorney General Jeff Sessions unleashed a torrent of uncompromising criticism against the state while talking with police officials at a conference sponsored by the California Peace Officers’ Association.
“We are a strong, prosperous, and orderly nation,” he said. “And such a nation must have a lawful system of immigration. I am not aware of any advanced nation that does not understand this fundamental tenet.”
Sessions said that Donald Trump was elected, in part, to right the wrongs of the previous administration. Those wrongs, he said, were evidenced by rising crime rates and an inattention to enforcing the immigration laws put in place by Congress. “Elections,” he said, “have consequences.”
“But, California, we have a problem,” he said. A series of actions and events has occurred that directly and adversely impact the work of our federal officers. For example, the mayor of Oakland has been actively seeking to help illegal aliens avoid apprehension by ICE. Her actions support those who flout our laws and boldly validate the illegality. There’s no other way to interpret her remarks.
“To make matters worse, the elected Lieutenant Governor of this state praised her for doing so,” he continued. “So here’s my message to Mayor Schaaf: How dare you. How dare you needlessly endanger the lives of law enforcement just to promote your radical open borders agenda.”
Sessions said, however, that Mayor Schaaf’s decision to forewarn illegal immigrants of an impending ICE raid was only one small aspect of the problems being generated in Sacramento.
“In recent years, California has enacted a number of laws designed to intentionally obstruct the work of our sworn immigration enforcement officers—to intentionally use every power it has to undermine duly-established immigration law in America,” he said. “ICE agents are federal law enforcement officers carrying out federal law. California cannot forbid them or obstruct them in doing their jobs. That’s why the Department of Justice has filed a lawsuit yesterday against the state of California to invalidate these unjust laws and to immediately freeze their effect. Federal agents must be able to do the job that Congress has directed them to do.”
California Democrats from the governor on down have vowed to dig their heels in and fight for their sanctuary policies all the way to the Supreme Court, if necessary, so this is a legal battle that is far from finished. Democrats see this as a winning political issue, so they don’t care how much money they have to spend or how many lives are endangered. They’ve committed themselves to lawlessness as it pertains to the border, and they have staked their entire party’s political future on the legalization of millions of illegal aliens. To be sure, they aren’t backing down until a court forces them to.
So let’s pray that happens.
