Kate Steinle Verdict: Ignore One Law, and the Rest Soon Fall
What kind of sickness is alive in our society where an illegal immigrant can flaunt our lack of proper border control five separate times? Where said immigrant can find sanctuary in an American city that has decided that the rule of law no longer matters? Where he can kill a U.S. citizen and then pay no serious penalty for the crime?
We hardly want to think about it.
But think about it we must, because what happened in the case of Kate Steinle’s murder, and her killer’s acquittal last week, is something we must confront as a country. It’s been a long time since our country has been slapped in the face with a wake-up call this loud. We ignore it – we hit the snooze button – at our own peril. This is not something that we can afford to just write off as another loony product of the liberal California court system. What happens in California is, all too often, a harbinger for what’s coming to the rest of the country. And that is probably more true when it comes to illegal immigration than on any other issue.
The verdict is, more than anything, the perfect example of what happens when a society begins loosening its grip on the rule of law. San Francisco (and, in a larger sense, Democrats across the U.S.) has been flagrantly thumbing its nose at federal immigration law for years. Earlier this year, driven on by anti-Trump fervor, Gov. Jerry Brown signed a bill that would bring the city’s sanctuary policies to the entire state. The left has nothing but contempt for the law as it pertains to immigration, so it is no surprise to see that contempt carry over to homicide. As long as Jose Ines Garcia Zarate is an “enemy” to Donald Trump, then he is obviously a friend to Californians. You know, except for the one he gunned down.
You cannot defend Garcia Zarate without being a brainwashed left-wing activist. There is no logical argument for this criminal being in the United States. There is no reasonable defense for San Francisco’s decision to release him back into the wild, ignoring the federal detainer request sent to them. And there is no sound legal reason for him being granted a full acquittal in this case. We are off the books and into the territory of the insane.
Donald Trump was elected under the pretense that his administration would restore the rule of law. It is now time for Republicans to do everything in their power to help him achieve that goal. Whether it means passing new laws or simply budgeting enough money that we can enforce the ones on the books, we must become a country that protects its citizens – NOT the foreign criminals who want to victimize them.
