The Los Angeles Times told us in Sunday’s paper that it was still not yet time to “panic” about the presidency of Donald Trump, but their 3-part series on the “chilling,” “disastrous,” “frightening,” “shocking” first months of the new administration seems to say otherwise. In the introductory piece, the editorial board said that their prediction – that Trump’s election would be catastrophic – turned out to be an understatement.
“Nothing prepared us for the magnitude of this train wreck,” they wrote. “In a matter of weeks, President Trump has taken dozens of real-life steps that, if they are not reversed, will rip families apart, foul rivers and pollute the air, intensify the calamitous effects of climate change and profoundly weaken the system of American public education for all.”
They’re keeping an open mind, in other words…
“What is most worrisome about Trump is Trump himself,” they argued. “He is a man so unpredictable, so reckless, so petulant, so full of blind self-regard, so untethered to reality that it is impossible to know where his presidency will lead or how much damage he will do to our nation.”
Of course, “damage” to the editorial board of the L.A. Times can essentially be read as “rolling back the precious policies of the Obama administration.” Anyone who believes in conservative solutions is at least somewhat “untethered to reality” in their world, so let’s take their hysteria with a grain of salt.
“The role of the rational opposition is to stand up for the rule of law, the electoral process, the peaceful transfer of power and the role of institutions; we should not underestimate the resiliency of a system in which laws are greater than individuals and voters are as powerful as presidents,” they concluded. “This nation survived Andrew Jackson and Richard Nixon. It survived slavery. It survived devastating wars. Most likely, it will survive again.”
Oh, we’d love to know what else these editors think the U.S. has “survived” to reach the pinnacle of its journey – the election of Barack Obama. If they were really being honest, they’d probably tell us this nation has “survived” Christopher Columbus, the Founding Fathers, Ronald Reagan, the Left Behind books, Billy Graham, and those 200 years where there wasn’t a single gay wedding.
The liberals in the press know this country is in for a great awakening if Trump stays in power. What they don’t realize is that the awakening is coming, Trump or no Trump. The awakening IS, already. It’s not that we’re turning back the clock; we’re repairing a clock that has been shattered beyond recognition.
Alas, some folks like it broken. They think it looks nice this way. They’re going to complain about the way the glue smells, no matter what brand we buy.
Oh well, that’s what makes it fun.
