Liberals Called Out for Their Sheer Hypocrisy on Social Distancing
Wow, it usually takes a year or two’s worth of time to catch liberals and Democrats in their blatant hypocrisy. For instance, Democrats didn’t whisper a word of protest when Barack Obama was keeping immigrants in “cages” at the border, but they were in the streets, filled with rage, when the Trump administration took that approach to illegal immigration. That was starkly hypocritical, but at least there were a few years in between the two idiotic viewpoints. You can forgive liberals for thinking they could get away with the turnabout.
But this?
It was less than two months ago that every Democrat in the country was screaming at Americans that the New 2020 Religion was “Social Distancing.” Bow, kneel, and don’t you dare go get your haircut. This draconian approach to a pandemic was viewed skeptically (if not hatefully) by many conservatives, who accused the left of using the coronavirus as an excuse to exercise unrestrained authority in violation of the Constitution and the very concept of American liberty. These conservatives were regarded as thoughtless rubes who would sacrifice their grandmothers for the sake of the Dow Jones.
But here we are, only a few weeks down the road, and suddenly we are to understand that social distancing is yesterday’s news. The COVID-19 pandemic is apparently gone (which should come as a surprise to anyone actually still following the numbers). Or, if not gone, than it apparently has the good graces to leave social justice protesters alone. Because for all the squalling we heard about people packing the beaches in Florida, we’ve heard nary a word of criticism for these George Floyd protesters, out in the streets, standing shoulder to shoulder, nose to nose. It’s all good.
“People are upset at the political leaders who think protesting and mass gatherings are more important suddenly than being able to feed your family or keep your business open,” said Stephen Miller of The Spectator.
“Remember, if you don’t social distance, you’re literally killing people,” tweeted conservative commentator Buck Sexton, referencing the current throngs. “That’s what they told us. The ‘experts.’”
The hypocrisy IS maddening, no doubt about that.
But you do have to say this much: This will be quite the test. If, in a few weeks, we see a massive spike in positive coronavirus cases, hospitalizations, and deaths among people who attended these protests (and everyone they came into contact with later), then we’ll know that social distancing was and is the way to go. If there isn’t such a spike, then we’ll know we can throw open the doors of the economy (and our lives) fully and get back to normal. At the very least, we’ll know that outdoor activities are not much of a risk. So, from that limited perspective, they’re actually doing the country a favor.
But no matter which way the wind blows, don’t forget the hypocrisy. Don’t forget that, as soon as it became politically expedient, liberals completely dropped their coronavirus warnings.
Much the same way they dropped their #MeToo movement the very moment it threatened Joe Biden.
