Majority in D.C. Want to Ban All Guns
In the nation’s capital, a new poll shows that 51% of residents would like to bring back a total ban on private gun ownership. That ban, which used to be law in Washington, D.C., was struck down as unconstitutional in 2008. That Supreme Court ruling led to the D.C. City Council taking various measures to enforce a ban they were no longer allowed to enforce. Subsequently, they have been smacked down in court time and time again.
But if the majority of residents have their way, Washington D.C. will go back to a state of unconstitutional rule and the Second Amendment will magically not apply.
47% of residents oppose the idea of bringing back a total gun ban.
While most issues are better settled at the local level, that does not hold true when it comes to our basic constitutional rights. For those, federal law must always triumph. And since the Second Amendment is extremely clear when it comes to our right to bear arms, this issue is not nearly as muddied as some liberals would have us believe. The only reason it is muddied at all is because we’ve voluntarily given away our Second Amendment freedoms. We read “shall not be infringed” as “try not to infringe too much.”
Even now, D.C. is trying to limit concealed carry permits. After being told in no uncertain terms that they were not allowed to ban concealed carry, the city council chose to hand out licenses in such a restrictive way that the ban is practically still in effect. This is currently being challenged once again by pro-Second Amendment lawyers.
Next time these issues find their way in front of a judge, he needs to just go ahead and rule expansively. Otherwise, these cretins are just going to find another loophole and another and another. That’s a waste of taxpayer money. Why are we clogging up the court system with this idiocy? The next time the city council chooses to thwart the Constitution, maybe they should be thrown in jail. Or, at the very least, impeached.
What’s interesting is that D.C. police chief Cathy Lanier appeared on 60 Minutes this weekend to say that citizens should “take the gunman out” if they find themselves in a terrorist situation.
“It’s the best option for saving lives before police can get there,” she said.
Indeed. But that option really only exists if the citizens have a reasonable way to “take the gunman out.”
And would you look at that? Our Constitution provides for just such a way.
