Mark Levin: Trump Critics Don’t Give a Damn About the Constitution
Between a majority in the House (including 13 Republicans) who just voted to reject President Trump’s declaration of a national emergency at the border, and a majority of Democrats in the Senate, who propose to do the same, Washington has been alive with Trump critics who claim the President is violating the Constitution by building the wall without congressional approval. But as a few Republicans in the Senate threaten to join the Democrats on a crusade for congressional power, conservative radio icon Mark Levin says that this sudden respect for the Constitution is scarcely believable.
On his radio show Tuesday, Levin slammed Chuck Schumer, Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski and the rest of the Washington brass who are now trying to put executive power back in the bottle.
“Have any of these individuals you’ve just heard — any of them — claimed that the administrative state is unconstitutional?” Levin asked. “Have any of them? That is, all the departments and agencies that write laws — isn’t Congress supposed to write laws and legislate, under Article I? Well, then, how can the EPA write laws, and the Agriculture Department, and the Education Department? How can all these departments write laws?
“And so they’ve conferred this massive power on this federal leviathan, this massive bureaucracy, to legislate,” Levin continued. “And then they sit there and they pretend that they’re for separation of powers. They’re not for separation of powers. I can’t think of one conservative in the Senate or one conservative in the House who has proposed eliminating a single department or agency, based on the Constitution’s separation of powers. I can’t think of one. Can you?”
Levin said that the idea that President Trump does not have the authority to look after our national security in the absence of congressional action is laughable – especially considering Congress’s reluctance to defend its power in the past.
“Where is it in the Constitution that the commander in chief, looking with his own two eyes at the southern border – that they’re wide open, that drugs are pouring in, that criminals, gang members are pouring in – where is it written that he has to sit on his hands, while Congress has violated the Constitution time and time and time again, by creating departments and agencies that legislate left and right and right and left?” he asked.
It would be one thing if the majority of Americans knew they were watching a dog and pony show on Capitol Hill, but the media is treating all of this like it is very serious and very real. Furthermore, these cases are not just going before Congress, they are unfolding in federal courts across the nation. Every time Trump decides to exercise the authority of his office against the will of the left, the Resistance comes unglued. That would be fine if we were talking about a bunch of hippy protesters, but we’re talking about senators, journalists, and even judges.
It’s a joke…but unfortunately, it’s not being treated like one.
