In a rather sick example of how deluded and psychopathic the liberal media has become, Washington Post columnist Dana Milbank wrote an execrable piece on Friday accusing Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell of essentially being a “Russian asset” because he blocked two ridiculously partisan election security bills coming out of the Democrat-controlled House.
“This doesn’t mean he’s a spy,” Milbank helpfully notes, “but neither is it a flip accusation. Russia attacked our country in 2016. It is attacking us today. Its attacks will intensify in 2020. Yet each time we try to raise our defenses to repel the attack, McConnell, the Senate majority leader, blocks us from defending ourselves. Let’s call this what it is: unpatriotic. The Kentucky Republican is, arguably more than any other American, doing Russian President Vladimir Putin’s bidding.”
Well, that’s if we don’t pay attention to a single Democrat, because the Party of Pelosi is doing far more to aid and abet Putin’s goals than anyone in the GOP. It was stated, explicitly, in our federal agencies’ assessments of the 2016 meddling that Putin’s goal was to undermine America’s faith in Western democracy. Who has done more to chisel away at that faith than the party that claims our president is illegitimate? Who has done more to help Putin’s dreams become reality than the Democrats, who have besieged this president with lawsuit after lawsuit, investigation after investigation?
No one is disputing the idea that Russia “interfered” in our elections, nor that they are continuing those “attacks,” but there is a mighty dispute about the seriousness of this issue. There is no evidence whatsoever that Russia changed a single vote in 2016, either through propaganda or direct tampering. For all anyone knows – Mueller, the FBI, the NSA, or Dana Milbank – the 2016 election would have proceeded exactly the same even if Putin had never done a single thing. To claim otherwise is fanciful and arrogant.
McConnell’s campaign tweeted out an obvious explanation for the new round of criticism: “The Democrats’ Russian conspiracy theories against President Trump hit a dead end during the Mueller hearing. No collusion. Case closed. So now, like a failed doomsday cult that predicted the end of the world, the liberal grifters need a fresh target: Mitch.”
Sounds about right. When the Democratic Party comes, humbled, before the American people and admits that they perpetrated a hoax against the duly-elected President of the United States, then maybe we’ll take their election security measures seriously. Until then, this just looks like another attempt to exert a federal takeover of state government.
