Every cable network was on the scene Thursday for Hillary Clinton’s hotly-anticipated “foreign policy address” in California. Of course, they weren’t counting down the seconds to Clinton’s speech because they thought it would have anything to do with foreign policy. They were there because her campaign had signaled what the speech really was: a half-hour roast of Republican nominee Donald Trump.
“I think as a performance, as a candidate, you could argue that this was the single best performance she’d had as a candidate this cycle,” said NBC’s Chuck Todd after the speech. “She delivered that speech very well, but it was not a foreign policy speech. This was a Trump takedown speech.”
Indeed it was. Hillary used an overarching, if vague, theme of foreign policy to craft what sometimes sounded like a comedy routine. In front of a very receptive crowd in San Diego, Clinton hit Trump with one-liner after one-liner, hoping to make the Republican look ridiculous and dangerous.
At times, Hillary sounded almost like a Bush neoconservative, pounding a strong, patriotic message that sounded nothing like the Hillary Clinton we’ve seen in the primaries. After months of defending herself from Bernie Sanders’ attacks from the left, Hillary appeared ready to embrace her less-liberal side on Thursday. The speech’s true audience was not liberals but national security conservatives who are opposed to Trump’s anti-globalization message.
But at the end of the day, a single speech – even with a raucous crowd laughing like they were at a comedy club – won’t change the true nature of Hillary Clinton’s foreign policy failures. Sure, Trump’s sometimes-erratic comments make for easy one-liners, but at least he didn’t send Syria and Libya into violent chaos. At least he didn’t jeopardize national security for purposes of convenience. At least he didn’t make the mistake of giving Iran billions of dollars in exchange for a very questionable nuclear promise.
In a year where Americans are clamoring for change, Hillary Clinton represents more of the same. She’s a crook, a liar, and a foreign policy disaster.
We’ll take the guy with the “very good brain” anyday.
