Well, we’re not sure what anyone expected when Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN), replete with Islamic hijab and a long history of anti-semitism, was elected as one of the first Muslim congresswomen in the U.S., but this seems just about par for the course. Omar is under fire this week for an interview she gave to Yahoo News, in which she said she almost has to “chuckle” when anyone refers to Israel as a democracy. The remarks, which call into question Israel’s very right to exist, are being called out by Republicans as the very sort of dangerous bigotry that has led to mass tragedy in the past.
“Most of the things that have been aggravating to me is that we have had a policy that makes one superior to the other,” Omar said in reference to the Israeli/Palestinian situation. “And we mask it with a conversation about justice and a two-state solution. When you have policies that clearly prioritize one over the other.”
So, let’s see. According to this idiot, the United States should give equal priority to the Palestinians (dirt poor, financed by and led by terrorist organizations, uniformly hostile to the United States) as we should to Israel (wealthy, democratic allies who are one of the few beacons of freedom in the Middle East). We expect this kind of nonsense rhetoric from Communist professors or Imams at the local mosque, but it is pretty damn shameful to hear this level of ignorance from a U.S. Representative.
But it gets worse…
First, you should understand that this woman sits on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, a fact that is chilling enough on its own.
Asked by Yahoo what she meant by criticizing the U.S.’s position on Israel, she expounded: “I mean, just our relationship with the Israeli government and the Israeli state. And so when I see Israel institute laws that recognize it as a Jewish state and does not recognize the other religions that are living in it.
“And we still uphold it as a democracy in the Middle East,” she continued. “I almost chuckle because I know that if we see that any other society we would criticize it, call it out. We do that to Iran, we do that to any other place that sort of upholds its religion. And I see that now happening with Saudi Arabia and so I am aggravated, truly, in those contradictions.”
Someone is going to have to point out the last time there was any significant pushback from the U.S. about Saudi Arabia, Iran, or any other Muslim state declaring themselves as such. Maybe there should be, but there certainly is not. Quite the opposite; the fur only flies when a certain American president tries to restrict travel from these countries. Then, there was LOTS of talk about how these are “Muslim” countries, and none of that talk was critical of them.
Omar is spouting little more than half-baked, anti-Jewish conspiracy theories, and it is a stain on our nation that she has ANY say whatsoever in shaping our foreign policy.
