According to a new poll from Gallup, there is no more important issue facing the United States than immigration – both legal and illegal. That’s how Republican voters tell the tale, anyway. The survey found that 41% of registered Republicans say immigration is the number one problem in America while 35% of self-identified conservatives feel the same way. When you take Democrats and independents into account immigration slips, but only to the number two position. Number one is the ever-vague problem of “the government.”
If immigration enforcement becomes one of the major issues on the 2020 campaign trail – and it’s hard to imagine it won’t – it will put Democrats at a distinct disadvantage. Not only has the left failed to come up with even a single solution to the current crisis at the border, they have failed to see that there is a problem in the first place.
The only problem they see is the well-worn “children in cages” screed, which may not pack as much of a political punch as they think it does. Several months ago, when we were smack dab in the middle of the Trump administration’s so-called family separations policy, polls showed that the majority of Americans blamed migrant parents more than they blamed Donald Trump. Which goes to show that we haven’t completely given up on the concept of personal responsibility in this country. That’s encouraging.
Democrats, instead of telling voters what they will do to bring this crisis to an end, are endlessly going to bat for illegal immigrants. If they’re not championing sanctuary cities, they’re fighting to make citizens out of Dreamers. If they’re not fighting for Dreamers, they’re attacking the administration for family separations. If they’re not waving the “children in cages” flag, they’re whining about the Census asking a citizenship question. At every turn, they find a way to put illegal immigrants ahead of American citizens. That might be a winning strategy…if illegal immigrants could vote. But don’t worry, they’re working on that one, too.
In the meantime, we have people like Dow Constantine, a state official up in Washington who has banned ICE from using King County International Airport to fly deported criminal aliens out of the United States.
“Here in King County, we are a welcoming community that respects the rights of all people,” Constantine said. “My Executive Order seeks to make sure all those who do business with King County uphold the same values. Our goal is to ban flights of immigrant detainees from our publicly owned airport, and I hope members of Congress shine a light on this practice and how it is currently funded.”
The left-wing media “fact-checks” the hell out of any Republican who claims Democrats want to turn us into an open-borders country, but at some point, what else can you call it? If you don’t want to guard the border and you don’t want to disincentivize illegal immigration and you don’t want to deport illegal aliens, how is your position distinguishable from “open borders?”
It isn’t, and the American people will hopefully soon see that, if they don’t already.
