What is happening in Seattle, Washington? Every time you turn around, this city is enacting some new piece of liberal legislation guaranteed to make life worse for its own citizens. First it was the $15 minimum wage referendum, a law that has already had predictable effects on the city’s economy. Now it’s this unconstitutional firearms tax the city council has unanimously levied. The tax, scheduled to become law in January, adds a $25 surcharge to every firearm purchase along with a two-cent surcharge on every round of ammunition.
“The city believes it is well within its legal authority to tax the sales of firearms and ammunition, and will vigorously defend the ordinance in court,” said Seattle City Attorney spokeswoman Kimberly Mills.
That’s exactly what they’re going to have to do, because the National Rifle Association has joined forces with several other Second Amendment defenders to file a lawsuit against the city. “We’ve been down this path before with Seattle when we sued them and won, knocking out their attempt to ban guns in city park facilities,” said Second Amendment Foundation founder Alan Gottlieb. “The city does not seem to understand that no matter how they wrap this package, it’s still a gun control law and it violates Washington’s long-standing preemption statute.”
That statute – a clause in the Washington state constitution – states that municipalities may not enact firearm regulations that conflict with state law. But hey, what does that matter when you’re a liberal activist masquerading as a city council member? You’re here to make a statement, dammit! You’re here to make sure you get a hearty pat on the back when you make your monthly call to your old hippie professors at whatever elitist university you attended. I went in there and gave ’em what for, Dr. Peacelove! I made a difference!
No, you didn’t. All you did was violate state and federal law, punishing law-abiding Seattle residents for the criminals you seem unable to stop. Just imagine what these liberals would say if the Jacksonville City Council slapped an extra tax on a gay marriage license. Heads would explode. Obama would address the nation. Jimmy Kimmel would cry on TV.
You don’t have to be a staunch gun-rights supporter to hope the NRA wins this lawsuit. You just have to be a defender of the Constitution, a label every American should proudly wear.
