NYT Columnist: If Shooter was a Muslim, GOP Would Do Something
“If only Stephen Paddock had been a Muslim … If only he had shouted ‘Allahu akbar’ before he opened fire on all those concertgoers in Las Vegas … If only he were a member of ISIS … If only we had a picture of him posing with a Quran in one hand and his semiautomatic rifle in another …
“If all of that had happened, no one would be telling us not to dishonor the victims and ‘politicize’ Paddock’s mass murder by talking about preventive remedies.”
So said The New York Times’ Thomas Friedman in yet another unnecessary, sick attack on the right following the tragic events of Las Vegas. Friedman and his fellow leftists couldn’t wait until the bodies were cold before they started calling for gun control, bans on silencers, and, in some cases, a watch list for white conservatives. And here we have him claiming, like so many of these idiots, that “we can’t talk” about the real issues because those nasty Republicans always want to cloud the subject with calls for calm.
These fools are irate because they know that nothing’s going to happen. Trump’s in the White House, Republicans control Congress, and we have a Supreme Court balanced towards the preservation of the Constitution. In such an environment, these liberals are absolutely right. Our Second Amendment is in safe keeping, and no amount of hysteria in the world is going to endanger it. And that makes them absolutely livid. They were already crying for Obama to come back; now they’re really sad that we’re not going to have another federal war on guns.
Well, as Obama himself said many times: “Elections have consequences.” And don’t think for a minute that Obama’s eight-year struggle to ban guns didn’t play a part in Trump’s election. Just like the rampant illegal immigration. Just like the war on cops. Just like the endless and increasingly-absurd attacks on traditional American culture. And yet the left has learned nothing. And if you weren’t sure about it before this week, you can be damn sure about it now. Because they’re right back to the well, calling for “common sense gun control” like they always do. And blaming “the right” for preserving an atmosphere where Americans get killed.
We know how to go after Islamic terrorists, Friedman argued.
“But what happens,” he wrote, “when the country of origin is us?
“Then we know what happens: The president and the Republican Party go into overdrive to ensure that nothing happens. Then they insist — unlike with every ISIS-related terror attack — that the event must not be ‘politicized’ by asking anyone, particularly themselves, to look in the mirror and rethink their opposition to common-sense gun laws.”
Friedman, like most Democrats, just doesn’t get it. He thinks the Republicans in Washington have teamed up with the NRA to fight back against the will of the American people. They REFUSE to admit the truth, which is that the Republicans and the NRA REPRESENT the will of the people. Better in some cases than others, but on this, there can be no mistake.
Oh, and another thing we shouldn’t forget: ISIS has now claimed twice that the shooter was one of theirs. Everyone from the FBI on down is telling us to pay them no mind, and maybe they’re right. But with no other obvious motive, a girlfriend suspiciously “out of the country” during the attack, and the sheer viciousness of this mayhem, we wonder. We wonder. Friedman and other “blame whitey” liberals may want to hold off on the speculation for a couple of more days…
