Obama Wants to Ban Gay Conversion Therapy
White House adviser Valerie Jarrett responded to a petition on Wednesday, signed by activists who want the administration to respond to the suicide of transgender teen Leelah Alcorn. In the teen’s suicide note, she blamed her religious parents for refusing to accept her as she was. As part of this, the legality of “gay conversion therapy” has come into question, and it is this controversial practice that Jarrett addressed.
“We share your concern about its potentially devastating effects on the lives of transgender as well as gay, lesbian, bisexual and queer youth,” wrote Jarrett. “The overwhelming scientific evidence demonstrates that conversion therapy, especially when it is practiced on young people, is neither medically nor ethically appropriate and can cause substantial harm.”
As of now, President Obama is not specifically calling for legislation to ban the practice at the federal level. But by weighing in, he has tacitly given his stamp of approval to measures taken by Washington D.C., New Jersey, and California to ban the practice for minors.
Once again, Obama and his fellow Democrats wrongly labor under the belief that they are amateur scientists. It should be immediately obvious that an issue like this has no business in the political realm, but liberals can’t pass up any chance they get to enforce their cockamamie idea of “social justice.” This president can’t be bothered to clean up the streets of Chicago, but he’s ready and willing to take up the cause of one dead transgender teen.
To be clear, this has nothing to do with the scientific validity of conversion therapy. If the president was concerned about outlawing dubious medical practices, half the chiropractic offices in the country would be shut down. But since that quackery isn’t being fought by the LGBT lobby, it’s nothing to be worried about. This is Obama trying to turn liberalism into law, and it’s about Democrats taking another step towards becoming America’s parents.
Just so we have this straight, let’s look at the scorecard. In you’re a liberal, it goes like this:
Killing a child in the womb: YES!
Taking a gay child to a psychiatrist: NO!
Makes sense.
Isn’t it remarkable how every time there is a clash between Christians and the LGBT crowd, the government always comes down in favor of the gays? Isn’t that just an astounding coincidence? The LGBT movement is always right and the Christians are always wrong! Without fail! You would think, just by the law of averages, it would go the other way once in a while.
Of course, we know that it’s not a coincidence at all. It has nothing to do with right and wrong. It has nothing to do with the Constitution. This is about codifying one set of opinions and values into law while simultaneously banning traditional religious thought. And if it looks this bad in 2015, what’s it going to look like in 2025?
