Online Trolls Prove a Damning Point About Racist Social Justice Warriors
Is it okay to be white?
Apparently not – or, at least, it’s not okay to SAY that it’s okay to be white. That was proven in stark terms last week when a group of online trolls from 4chan put up posters at college campuses and high schools around the country proclaiming that very sentiment: IT’S OKAY TO BE WHITE. Nothing else. Nothing about how it’s “better” to be white or “worse” to be some other race. Just a friendly – if knowingly controversial – reminder that despite all the talk on the left these days about privilege and supremacy and oppression, it was still just fine to walk around and live your life with white skin. And while the 4channers might have known what they were doing when they put the posters up, is that really a sentiment that any sane individual could argue against?
Depends on your definition of “sane.”
The Washington Post did a halfway-acceptable job of explaining the intent of the movement:
A series of messages said people should print signs reading “IT’S OKAY TO BE WHITE,” post them on college campuses and elsewhere, and then stand back and watch the fun begin. News reports would draw attention to the posters, the writer behind the idea predicted. Then white Americans derisively referred to as “normies” in the white nationalist ecosphere will discover that American journalists and “lefties” hate white people. In the process, normies will stop regarding news outlets as credible. That would deal a damaging blow in the culture war, the post said, inevitably converting more “normies” to the white nationalist, alt-right side. It could be that easy to seed social disruption, the post implied.
You can call this cynical, divisive, or whatever: The truth is that it shouldn’t have worked out nearly as well as it did. But, like the pranksters at 4chan suspected, liberal race-baiting morons across the country immediately erupted into their ninth level of outrage.
“I just realized how much hate is going on. We live in a world without love, and it’s crazy,” said Moshe Mekori, a black student at Concordia College, where some of the posters were put up. “I thought this was the last place I would see that, but apparently it’s happening.”
“Really? Those type of posters? In a school as diverse as Blair,” asked at Montgomery Blair High School in Maryland.
“As a parent, yeah, it’s something that troubles me. It troubles us,” said a Blair parent named Shaun Burke.
On Twitter, a user named “Jess” asked, “Whomst the f**k is putting ‘It’s Okay to Be White’ posters all over campus. First of all, it’s not.” Another user replied that she hoped the perpetrator was “being sarcastic.”
Also: “Whomst?”
It seems like the prank was uncovered a little too quickly for the 4channers to really get campus liberals worked up into a good froth, but merely the fact that these signs were considered controversial in the first place is already a decent sign of how twisted things have gotten in the social justice community. Merely the fact that this had any POTENTIAL of starting trouble is reason enough to be deeply concerned about the future of this country.
