There’s a dreadful piece of garbage article in the Daily Beast this week about the Central American caravan, and it’s just dripping with the sanctimonious arrogance that only a well-fed, comfortable liberal living in the United States can muster.
Just as white limousine liberals on the coast think nothing of bashing black Republicans for their “privilege,” David Agren – the writer of this piece – thinks it’s perfectly okay for his to bash Mexicans and even some of the caravan migrants themselves for not having a particularly charitable view of these invaders. Granted, Agren lives in Mexico and not the U.S., but he’s still a white American living down south by choice. You’d think the left’s Oppression Hierarchy would prevent him from casting these aspersions, but apparently there’s nothing in the world that trumps Liberal Privilege.
Agren’s article is really just another attempt to make President Trump out to be a monster for daring to, you know, enforce our border laws, but he manages to make it clear throughout the piece that ANYONE who does not love, adore, and worship migrant Hondurans is a scumbag worthy of public shaming. Even if they themselves happen to be a Honduran migrant!
“Jeffrey Renderos, 31, put his name in a ledger and received a ticket with the number 1655,” he writes. “Renderos, a bearded Honduran who fled gang threats and arrived in Tijuana six months ago, figured he would wait at least a month to have a hearing—though he wasn’t complaining. He couldn’t contain his scorn for the caravan, however.
“’If they acted like civilized people, it would be different,’ he said. When asked why he held such a poor opinion of fellow Hondurans, he responded, ‘You saw the way they clashed with police?’
Agren uses this as a jumping off point to disapprove of the way many Tijuana natives have reacted to having thousands of homeless, disease-ridden travelers camp out in their city:
The arrival of so many caravan travelers and images of clashes with police have exposed an unseemly underbelly of xenophobia. A poll in the newspaper El Universal showed 49 percent of Mexicans saying caravans shouldn’t be allowed to cross the country.
“First Mexico and Mexicans,” read one comment in response to the polls.
“It’s anti-poor people,” said Javier Urbano, a professor at the Ibero-American University in Mexico City, who studies immigration. Immigration from the United States, Canada and Europe was been welcomed, he said—in contrast to Central Americans—as such migrants tend to be whiter and come from wealthier countries middle class Mexicans say they want to emulate.
Ah, racist white privilege rears its ugly head again…even in Mexico!
Welp, if being pro-American (and, for Tijuanans, pro-Mexican) means we have to endure the snobby tsk-tsking of liberal elites like Agren, we suppose it isn’t too high a price to pay.
