Progressive Actress in Trouble After Equating Pot Legalization with “Reparations”
Former Sex and the City star Cynthia Nixon stepped in it this weekend when she equated the legalization of marijuana with reparations owed to Black America. Nixon, who is mounting an insurgent primary campaign against New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, told Forbes magazine Saturday that she was not only in favor of legalizing pot in the state but she had some ideas of how to make sure that legalization helped the right people.
“Now that cannabis is exploding as an industry, we have to make sure that those communities that have been harmed and devastated by marijuana arrests get the first shot at this industry,” she said. “We must prioritize them in terms of licenses. It’s a form of reparations.”
Nixon immediately found herself under fire from black activists who told the actress to stay in her lane.
“I’m for legalizing marijuana and I like Cynthia Nixon but putting pot shops in our communities is not reparations,” tweeted Al Sharpton. “Health care, education!!”
Oh, is Sharpton finally admitting after all these years that Rush Limbaugh was right when he said Obamacare was a form of reparations to the black community? Gee, isn’t that interesting.
The DNC chairman for Manhattan, Keith Wright, said that Nixon’s ignorance was on display. He called her “ill-informed” on slavery and the payback that black Americans are due.
“Reparations is a repayment for the free labor that built this country,” Wright said. “Ms. Nixon should relegate her comments to legalization, pro or con. I believe social equity should be a part of licenses to sell marijuana, if and when legalization does occur. However, it is insulting to my soul, that the free labor that my ancestors gave to this country would be equated with the selling of marijuana.”
So from Wright’s comments, we can gather that, yes, marijuana licenses should be doled out to blacks first, but no, we should not actually come out and call that “reparations.” We have to keep that in our back pocket so we can continue to demonize White America and use the issue of slavery as a political talking point for the next two hundred years. Man, you guys gotta do a better job of hiding your agenda.
Nixon attempted to clarify her comments in a tweet, writing, “There’s no way legalizing marijuana would be a remedy for the legacy of slavery & Jim Crow. But when it comes to repairing the wrongs of a racist drug war, we’ve got to make sure black and Latino communities are prioritized in the new legalized industry.”
Well, Nixon is learning a painful lesson about liberal politics in the year 2018: It’s all about the identity, baby. As a lesbian, we assume that Nixon can say anything and everything she wants about LGBT rights. But with very little melanin in her skin, she’s limited in what she can say about the Black Cause. Even though we think it’s a little silly to even be talking about reparations, much less using marijuana sales licenses as a form of them, it’s even crazier to think that black Democrats think the way to succeed is to savagely attack white liberals who are on their side and actually buy into their misguided worldview.
But hey, by all means, keep on keeping on.
