Rashida Tlaib Sheepishly Apologizes for Booing Hillary Clinton
Sitting on a stage for a Bernie Sanders event on Friday in Iowa, Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) got some backlash for a shot across the bow at Hillary Clinton. When the moderator of the event brought up Clinton’s recent remarks about Sanders, booing erupted from the left-wing audience. When the moderator urged the crowd to be “classy,” Tlaib interjected with some booing of her own.
“I’ll boo,” she said. “Booooooo.”
Laughing along with her fellow Dems on stage, including the notorious Ilhan Omar, Tlaib said, “You all know I can’t be quiet. The haters will shut up on Monday when we win.”
Tlaib, the moderator, and the crowd were reacting to comments Clinton made about Sanders in an interview to promote her upcoming Hulu documentary.
“He was in Congress for years,” Clinton said. “He had one senator support him. Nobody likes him. Nobody wants to work with him. He got nothing done. He was a career politician. It’s all just baloney, and I feel so bad that people got sucked into it.”
In another interview a few days later, she accused Sanders of sinking her ability to unite the party after the primaries.
“All the way up until the end, a lot of people highly identified with his campaign were urging people to vote third party, urging people not to vote,” she said. “It had an impact.”
Those comments have enraged the Sanders support squad, but Tlaib apparently got her hand slapped by the powers-that-be in the Democratic Party, because she quickly apologized for her booing on Saturday.
“I am so incredibly in love with the movement that our campaign of #NotMeUs has created. This makes me protective over it and frustrated by attempts to dismiss the strength and diversity of our movement,” Tlaib explained in a statement. “However, I know what is at stake if we don’t unify over one candidate to beat Trump and I intend to do everything possible to ensure that Trump does not win in 2020. In this instance, I allowed my disappointment with Secretary Clinton’s latest comments about Senator Sanders and his supporters get the best of me.”
The battle between the Establishment Democrats and the insurgent socialist wing of the party was fierce in 2016, and it is likely to spill out into open warfare in the coming months. This week, the DNC changed the qualifications candidates needed to meet to get on the debate stage – a change that will allow Michael Bloomberg to join the next event. President Trump, among others, was eager to point out the unfairness on Sunday.
“Many of the ads you are watching were paid for by Mini Mike Bloomberg. He is going nowhere, just wasting his money, but he is getting the DNC to rig the election against Crazy Bernie, something they wouldn’t do for @CoryBooker and others. They are doing it to Bernie again, 2016,” Trump tweeted.
It’s gonna get ugly.
