Boy, once the libs decide that something is politically incorrect, there’s really no stopping the freight train to Idiotville. Two prominent NFL announcers said this week that they would not be mentioning the team’s name when discussing the Washington Redskins on the air. CBS lead analyst Phil Simms and NBC’s Tony Dungy are among the first broadcasters to determine that it would be “insensitive” to continue using the name when talking about the franchise.
Talking to the Associated Press, Simms said, “My very first thought is it will be Washington the whole game.” Simms is referring to CBS coverage of the Giants-Redskins game on September 25. Though he stopped short of actually damning the team name as racist, he said he is sensitive to complaints about the name from Native American communities.
In an email response to the AP, Dungy – a former decorated NFL coach – has opted to take much the same route. “I will personally try not to use Redskins and refer to them as Washington. Personal opinion for me, not the network.”
To regard this push for a name-change as insipid is letting it off too lightly. We have serious problems in this country. Our public educational system could be redesigned by a trained monkey and do a better job than it’s doing today. Our economy has yet to make a full recovery some seven years after the housing crash of 2007. Overseas, a 10,000-member terrorist army threatens to undo everything our troops sacrificed so much to accomplish in Iraq. This is what we’re focused on? The name of a football team?
Can you imagine how patently uncomfortable it’s going to be in the broadcast booths of the major networks with every broadcaster deciding for himself whether to use the damn Redskins name? What percentage of NBC or CBS’s audience is made up of easily-offended Native Americans to begin with? Why do we constantly have to cowtow to these slender minorities when it comes to how we talk in this country?
Whether or not television announcers use the term or not is really the least of the controversy. Last year, the Obama administration stuck its nose into the fray, and the Patent Office canceled the NFL team’s trademark because a handful of people find it offensive. This is Obama’s legacy. Ruin the economy, force a historically-bad healthcare bill into American law, and eliminate a team name that has stood unchallenged for nearly a hundred years. Great job, man. Thanks.
What’s really idiotic about all this is that no one can take a step back and realize that the team name and logo are tributes to Native Americans! The team is named the Redskins because they want to be seen as tough, strong fighters who will stop at nothing to protect their gridiron territory. Yes, maybe the name itself has been used in the (distant) past to disparage American Indians, but when was the last time you heard anyone say “redskins” as a slur? The whole thing is an exercise in foolishness, and it’s disappointing to see the PC crowd get their way yet again.
