Schumer Calls on President Biden to Declare Climate Change an Emergency

In an interview with MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow on Monday, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said that he would like to see President Biden declare a national emergency to confront climate change.

“It might be a good idea for President Biden to call a climate emergency,” Schumer said. “He can do many, many things under the emergency powers that he could do without legislation. Trump used this emergency for a stupid wall, which wasn’t an emergency. But if there ever was an emergency, climate is one.”

What kills us is how Democrats spent the last four years complaining that Trump’s use of executive orders was an abuse of power in line with a would-be dictator. In fact, we’re pretty sure we heard Biden himself say that at one of those late-campaign town halls. But that didn’t prevent him from coming into office with his pen and making an unprecedented number of the orders in his first week. And it hasn’t stopped people like Schumer from calling on him to go even further.

Nor is Biden done yet, particularly when it comes to climate change. From NBC:

President Joe Biden will deliver remarks Wednesday on his plan to tackle climate change and sign related executive actions to further the key part of his agenda, which includes “creating jobs and restoring scientific integrity,” the White House said Wednesday.

Some of the executive actions Wednesday will focus on elevating climate change to a national security priority, directing the federal government to conserve about 30 percent of all federal land and water by 2030 and suspending new leases for natural gas and oil development on federal lands and waters, two sources familiar with his plans said.

Biden’s executive orders will also reportedly focus on his commitment to “environmental justice,” which is one of those woke catchphrases used by Black Lives Matter activists to blur the lines between racial policies and global warming. What’s the connection? We’re sure some Really Smart Person like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez can explain it to you, but we have to wonder if the majority of people who voted for Joe Biden actually understood what they were ushering in. And we wonder how long it will be before they realize that their vote against the BAD ORANGE MAN was one of the worst blunders of their lives.
