See Why This Liberal Hollywood Star Has Made the Left Very Angry
In an ordinary timeline, one might expect reliably liberal actress Susan Sarandon to be on the front lines of the Resistance, going toe-to-toe with President Donald Trump with one wacky tweet after another. As it happens, however, Sarandon has been relatively quiet about the Trump administration and, as she told the UK’s Guardian newspaper this weekend, she’s not the least bit sorry that she didn’t join the Hillary Clinton bandwagon in 2016.
Sarandon, who angered her Hollywood liberal friends by supporting Bernie Sanders and ultimately voting for Green Party candidate Jill Stein in November, says she still believes that Clinton would have been worse for the U.S. than Trump. And that position has made her an enemy to many on the left.
“I’m not attacked from the right at all,” Sarandon said. The Guardian noted that Sarandon “is accused of not checking her white privilege, of throwing away her vote on a third-party candidate during the U.S. presidential election, and of recklessly espousing a political cause that let Trump in through the backdoor.”
And to all of this, Sarandon merely shrugs.
“I did think she was very, very dangerous,” she said of Clinton. “We would still be fracking, we would be at war. It wouldn’t be much smoother. Look what happened under Obama that we didn’t notice. She would’ve done it the way Obama did it, which was sneakily. He deported more people than have been deported now. How he got the Nobel peace prize I don’t know. I think it was very important to have a black family in the White House and I think some of the stuff he did was good. He tried really hard about healthcare. But he didn’t go all the way because of big Pharma.”
You can see that Sarandon is not about to begin espousing the finer points of conservatism, much less jump on the Trump Train, but that makes her sudden pariah status on the left even more astounding. You would think that a movement in such peril would not be in any rush to kick their most notable, outspoken champions out of the club, but there you have it. Sometimes it is the Bernie folks shouting down the Hillary group. Sometimes it’s the other way around. But what you can see is that this party – broadly, the Democrats – is in such disarray that it’s almost impossible to imagine them getting their power back. They have gone so far down the left-wing rabbit hole that they don’t even know which way is up anymore. It’s really sad.
But sad in the way that makes you laugh really hard.
